DUS Characterization for Farmer varieties of rice

L.V. Subba Rao; G. Shiva Prasad; M. Chiranjivi; U. Chaitanya; R. Surendhar

For the establishment of the distinctness among Sixty-five landraces of rice, forty three characters were used. Characterization of Sixty-five landraces of rice was done using forty three agro-morphological traits following Distinctiveness, Uniformity and Stability test (DUS) during kharif season of 2011 at the DRR farm, ICRISAT campus. Out of Sixty-five varieties studied, thirty-two were found to be distinctive on the basis of twenty two essential and twenty four additional characters. This study will be useful for breeders, researchers and farmers to identify and choose the restoration and conservation of beneficial genes for crop improvement and also to seek protection under Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers Rights Act.

Estimation of Genetic Variability Parameters in Soft Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Genotypes

K. Pragnya; K.V. Radha Krishna; L.V. Subba Rao; K. Suneetha

Rice (Oryza sativa L. 2n: 2X: 24) is the most important cereal crop cultivated widely in many parts of the world. Over two billion people in Asia alone derive 80% of their energy needs from rice which contains 80% carbohydrates, 7-8% protein and also fat and dietary fiber (Juliano, 1985). Out of the 24 species of rice, 22 species are wild and only 2 species are cultivated i.e., O. sativa and O. glaberima. It is one of the very few crop species endowed with rich genetic diversity which account over one lakh landraces and improved cultivars (Samal et al., 2014).

Correlation Coefficient Analysis for Yield and its Components in Rice (Oryza sativa L.) Genotypes

B. Kalyan; K.V. Radha Krishna; L.V. Subba Rao

To break the yield barriers in rice breeding strategies, attempts are being made. Crop yield is the end product of the interaction of a number of other interrelated attributes. A thorough understanding of the interaction of characters among themselves had been of great use in plant breeding. The efficiency of selection for yield mainly depends on the direction and magnitude of association between yield and its component characters and also among themselves. Character association provides information on the nature and extent of association between pairs of metric traits and helps in selection for the improvement of the character. For the improvement of grain yield, the knowledge on the association between grain yield and its component characters will be helpful.
