Management truck tire information in logistic industry using RFID technology

La-or Kovavisaruch; Pichit Lertudomtana; Sakol Horungruang

Logistics plays pivotal role in the supply chain as well as in developing countrypsilas competitive edge. According to Thailand Department of Land Transportation report in 2006, there were 848,843 registered trucks which are key driver of cargo transportation. It is apparent that business sector becomes very competitive, and thus, fleet operators have to minimize their operating cost in order to edge at its competitor. Other thing being equal, two variables affect operating cost. First is fuel expenses, which is world commodity and market fluctuation is inevitable. Truck tires are another contribution to the operating cost. Unlike the fuel, the truck tires can be retreaded and, hence, the operating cost can be reduced. Effective tire management can prolong its life span significantly before renewal. Software, addressing tire pressure, temperature and tire types, would provide tire management solution. In this paper, we present the effectiveness of deploying the RFID system in acquiring information for tire management via testing RFID systems in one tire re-treading company. We analyze the trade off between operating time and system implementation cost. The performance of RFID on the different tire types is also studied. Last but not least, we propose a RFID system configuration to minimize data acquisition time.

Interexchange Museum Database via Web Service

La-or Kovavisaruch; Virach Sornlertlamvanich; Pobsit Kamolvej; N. Iamrahong; G. Prommoon

This paper is a conceptual presentation of a standardized museum database capable of exchanging information across various museum exhibitions in different countries. The design is a result of a study conducted on the database for cultural and artistic museum collections from multiple agencies. The study proposes a standardized database containing a collection of common, required information among museums, as well as additional related information. Implementation of the conceptual database design is expected to ensure important information is not lost during data exchange, allow remote database searches from one museum to another, and enable the exchange of cultural and artistic information internationally between countries that employ the same standard.

The study of deploying RFID into the steel industry

La-or Kovavisaruch; Putchapun Laochan

Steel and iron play an important role in many major industries since steel is a significant component in many forms of infrastructure. According to the statistics of the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), the value of the global crude steel consumption in 2006 exceeds a billion metric tons in 2006; meanwhile the Iron and Steel institute of Thailand (ISIT) reported that the steel usage in Thailand is around 16 million metric tons. However the global economic downturn is having a severe impact on the steel sector. Currently, many steel-related industries in North America, Europe and the Middle East have slowed down; even the steel consumption in China — which is expected to be around 35% of the global consumption of steel — is also showing signs of slowing down. This is expected to be the down time of the market for steel. With the current economic downturn, it is necessary to reduce processing costs in order to survive. In this paper, we study the feasibility of deploying RFID in the steel industry as a tool to reduce the cost of production. In terms of the technology, it is a challenge to deploy the radio frequency in a metal environment. Furthermore, the price of the technology is still considered to be expensive compared to the barcode system. This paper considers all factors and identifies RFID systems that would be suitable for deployment in the steel industry.
