Aim: To observe the understanding of the elderly and their relatives regarding sexuality and Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Method: This is a descriptive study, using a focus group, interviews and content analysis. Thirty-three seniors citizens were the focus of the research, divided into six groups, together with nine relatives who were also interviewed; all were patients of a Primary Health Care unit located in the city of Uberaba, Brazil. Results: Thirteen categories emerged, which were divided into five groups: male senior citizens, female senior citizens, a mixed group of men and women, and relatives. Discussion: From the main categories identified in the research, it was observed that there is a reduced awareness about AIDS and the association of the disease to death; lack of information and protection during sexual intercourse. Relatives valorize the sexuality of older people and are not aware of public, nation-wide educational campaigns aimed at this age group. Conclusion: There is a lack of understanding about AIDS and its association with death among the elderly, and their sexuality, from the point-of-view of the relatives.

OBJECTIVE Validate the content of an instrument that assesses the quality of a software applied to the risk classification of patients. METHOD Methodological study, conducted in three stages: adaptation of the instrument, content validation through Delphi technique and pre-test. The results were analyzed through Content Validity Index, Overall Content Validity Index and Inter-rater Reliability. RESULTS The final version of the instrument comprises 8 characteristics and 28 sub-characteristics, being 37 general questions to computer experts and nurse and 7 specific questions to computer experts, including 1 question and excluding 3 questions of the original instrument. We obtained Overall Content Validity of 92% and Inter-rater Reliability of 100% in the second Delphi round. Final considerations: The instrument has content validity, allowing to assess the technical quality and functional performance of the software applied to the risk classification of patients.

Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of organ transplants in the state of Parana, Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional quantitative study was conducted with data from 2,036 solid organ transplants performed in the state between 2011 and 2015. Three indicators were calculated, per capita transplants, meeting the demands of the population and the demand for transplants, which demonstrated the effectiveness and the disparities in the process. The association between the variables was verified by Pearsons Chi-Square test and Fishers exact test. Results: Most transplants were performed in philanthropic hospitals, male, funded by public funding, and there was an annual increase in the number of transplants per capita and in the productivity of kidney, liver and heart transplantation teams. Although renal transplantation is the most performed in absolute numbers, it served a maximum of 2.2% of its demand. Conclusion: It is necessary to devise strategies to meet the demand for organ transplants, above all, to consolidate the process of donating organs in the state under study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of needle and catheter over needle with active protection safety devices in the hospital context. A cross-sectional and retrospective study was undertaken at a public university hospital in Southern Brazil. The population was composed of consumption and material cost worksheets and 53 records of workers and students who suffered perforating accidents that occurred before and after the implementation of the safety devices, in the periods named A: June/2010 till June/2011 and B: June/2012 till June/2013. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. There was a 30% increase in accidents between period A and period B. The cost went from 44.769,93 to 139.558,08 American dollars. Educational strategies are recommended to enhance the cost-effectiveness of safety devices in healthcare organizations. DESCRIPTORS: Nursing. Occupational health. Hospital costs. Occupational acidents. Biological contamination.
