Being an Adult Learner and Learning Through Life

Larissa Jõgi

Every learning experience is an experience in a lifetime. Life experience, life course and learning experiences form understandings of learning. In this chapter I am basing on empirical findings from the research Andragogical, social and psychological factors co-influence learning readiness and training activeness in the context of lifelong learning and discussing how adults from different generations understand learning in context of life course. Empirical data were based on semi-structured interviews with adults from different generations. Through experiences about learning, it is possible to understand the entity of adult learners and the essence of the development understandings of learning during the life course. Understandings of learning are unique and develop through life. The generational differences are associated mainly with positioning self as learner and understandings of learning. The findings help us understand and reflect how unique and subjective is personal learning experience and how different are attitudes and understandings of learning, which adults as learners bring to social and educational process.

Professionalization of Adult Educators in Estonia – From a Biographical Perspective

Larissa Jõgi; Marin Gross

The importance of adult education as part of lifelong learning and adult educators who play a key role in making lifelong learning a reality is widely recognized and discussed in adult education practice. In Estonia education policy, with its focus on lifelong learning, has been subject to a continual systematic process of strategic renewal. There is increased concern about the need to qualify adult education practitioners so as to enhance quality in the provision of adult education and training.
