OBJECTIVEnTo evaluate the risk factors associated with treatment abandonment by overweight or obese children and adolescents.nnnMETHODSnA cross-sectional study, conducted in 2011, at the Childhood Obesity Center, in Campina Grande, Brazil, with the records of 208 children and adolescents, between three and 18 years of age, divided into two groups: Group I included those who abandoned treatment, and Group II included those who did not abandon treatment.nnnRESULTSnNon-adherence was significantly associated with higher income (OR=5.8), high maternal education (OR=2.4), white skin color (OR=2.9), and obesity (OR=3.6).nnnCONCLUSIONnDespite the new academic-care approach, the non-adherence to treatment rate was high, and was associated with sociodemographic and nutritional factors.

CONCLUSOES: reforca-se a sugestao de que a deteccao/identificacao da Acantose nigricans pode vir a ser utilizada na consulta de enfermagem como ferramenta para a identificacao de adolescentes com excesso de peso com maior risco de alteracao metabolica.OBJECTIVEnto analyze the association between the presence of Acantose nigricans and metabolic changes in overweight adolescents, so as to ascertain the relevance of the identification of this marker in the nursing consultation.nnnMETHODna cross-sectional study undertaken between April 2009 and April 2010 with 118 adolescents who were service users of the Center for Child Obesity in Campina Grande in the Brazilian State of Paraíba (PB). The presence of Acantose nigricans, and the subjects anthropometric measurements, were investigated. The following exams were made: insulin, triglycerides, HDL-Cholesterol, Glucose and the homeostatic model of assessment (HOMA-IR).nnnRESULTSnthere was association between the presence of Acantose nigricans and participants with insulin resistance (p=0.008), metabolic syndrome (p=0.031), elevated triglycerides (p=0.045) and altered HDL (p=0.002).nnnCONCLUSIONSnthe suggestion is supported that the detection/identification of Acantose nigricans may be used in the nursing consultation as a tool for identifying overweight adolescents with greater risk of metabolic changes.

OBJECTIVEnTo identify associations between the risk factors for hypertension and the nursing diagnosis of overweight in adolescents.nnnMETHODSnCross-sectional study conducted in 2013 with 347 teenagers attending schools in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, who answered a form about the socioeconomic profile, physical activity, eating habits and family history of disease and who underwent physical examination. For analytical analysis, two groups were formed: students with the Nursing Diagnosis overweight (n=100) and students without this diagnosis (n=247).nnnRESULTSnthe risk factors for hypertension associated with the Nursing Diagnosis were: abdominal obesity (OR=40.0), food intake rich in sugar and fat (OR=40.0), family history of hypertension (OR=6.9), obesity and diabetes (OR=2.0), abnormal systolic and diastolic blood pressure (OR=5.5).nnnCONCLUSIONnthe risk factors for hypertension that presented association with the Nursing Diagnosis overweight were abdominal obesity, eating habits, family history of diseases and abnormal blood pressure. These findings may contribute to prevent hypertension in adolescents, in that it directs the gaze of nurses to develop effective measures to address these risk factors.

The aim of this study was to identify primary health care nursesAE perception on their performance in the health status assessment of overweightadolescents in schools. This is a descriptive, qualitative study. It was conducted in Natal-RN with four nurses who worked in primary health careunits whose territory encompassed a number of state schools. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews. The data werethen analyzed by using the technique of content analysis (theme coding). The following thematic categories were identified on the role of nurses inthe assessment of overweight at schools: a) difficulty of monitoring adolescents in primary health care; b) causes for the increase of overweight inadolescence; c) health actions developed in schools; d) overweight prevention, identification and intervention in adolescents at school. Our studyrevealed gaps in nursesAE performance related to the monitoring of adolescents. The interviewees held other professionals accountable for theproblem and exempted themselves from the obligation to implement actions, such as health promotion, disease prevention or treatment.
