Maps and the Internet | 2003
Lars Brodersen
Publisher Summary When carrying out a project to visualize geo-data through Internet maps, the first step is to define the roles of value modeling and data modeling. The constraints of transmission restrict the communication that will take place. These constraints include subjective transmission and manipulation in an Internet-based infrastructure environment. The communication model describes the basic elements— data, information, and knowledge—and relate these to the transmission flow. This leads to a discussion of the quality of transmission. This chapter gives a definition of “quality” , with a description of possible pitfalls, including the lack of a formal language. It also shows the way one can estimate the quality of transmission by a formula containing parameters like accessibility, relevance, utility, new knowledge, and price, compared to the users expectations. A method that leads a map producer through the necessary mental processes from an idea to a list of contents is also described in the chapter.
