Capability-driven development (CDD) is a novel paradigm for organisational modelling and information technology development. Its cornerstones are capability modelling (including goals, context, processes), pattern-based design, and runtime context awareness and service delivery adjustment. There is a lack of empirical studies regarding the industrial application of CDD. This paper reports on a case study that focuses on capability modelling within a service-oriented architecture development project. We have collected lessons learned, as well as open challenges to feedback the improvement of the CDD methodology.

Organizations operate in increasingly dynamic and diverse environments. This leads to high variability within the organization, and the necessity to create context-aware information systems. As a part of these systems, context and business process metrics need to be monitored and acted upon. Capability Driven Development (CDD) addresses these challenges and integrates organizational development with IS (Information System) development. This paper integrates results from an industry survey and three industrial cases to define the key methodology goals for CDD.

Enterprises operate in dynamically changing environments, consequently, information systems (IS) are a subject to continuous changes. The IS need to be adjusted to different customers, markets and run-time contexts affecting their design and delivery. Variability and customization of the information systems has become a serious challenge. Capability Driven Development (CDD) has been proposed as a new approach for dealing with variability. CDD allows delivering enterprise capability in dynamically changing circumstances - contexts. To model enterprise capabilities, concepts defined in the Capability meta-model are used. This paper discusses initial Capability modeling experiences. The main emphasis is put on the Capability design phase of the CDD approach. Several empirical cases are included to share the Capability modeling experiences, to validate the Capability meta-model as well as to discuss the difficulties of Capability modeling, open issues and future work.

Involvement of potential users in early stages of elaboration of development methods is needed for successful method adoption in practice. This paper reports on activities of introduction and assessment of the Capability Driven Development (CDD) methodology with a group of industry representatives. This was performed in an interactive workshop and the main evaluation objectives were to assess the relevance of the CDD concepts and their recognizability as well as to identify potential use cases for CDD application. A dialogical approach was used to convey the CDD methodology to the participants and to entice discussions. The main findings are that the participants easily recognized the modeling constructs for capability design. They found that adjustments are particularly useful for the purpose of identification capability steering actions. The use cases described by the participants were later formalized as capability models.

Capabilities characterize ability and capacity to provide business services in different circumstance in accordance to performance requirements. The Capability Driven Development methodology provides means for designing and evaluating such capabilities. This paper specifically focuses on the capacity aspect of capability design. It assumes that every capability is delivered by using a specific set of resources and delivery performance directly depends upon availability of appropriate resources. A method for evaluation of capacity requirements is proposed in the paper. Its application is illustrated using an example of design of information technology management services.
