Liver scintigraphy has greater sensitivity than specificity, as do many other nuclear medicine imaging procedures. Used with a confident understanding of its limitations and with realistic expectations of benefit, liver scintigraphy is a simple atraumatic method that can provide rapid information to the clinician facing a perplexing diagnostic question. Acute parotid gland swelling following intravenous injections of iodinated contrast medium

Abstract A severe case of painful, bilateral parotid gland swelling immediately following administration of tri-iodinated contrast medium is reported. Intravenous diphenhydramine (Benadryl) was used to reverse the swelling and is advocated in similar situations. Corticosteroids are recommended for salivary gland swelling unresponsive to antihistamines and for prophylactic administration when an examination must be performed in the iodine-sensitive patient.
