Davis and Houck 1988 raised the issue of the current value of linguistic atlas data, mainly because, in our view, no dialectologist has really answered Glenna Pickford, who noted that dialectologists tend to describe primarily the language of older, uneducated subjects, native to, in Pickford’s terms, &dquo;culturally subordinate&dquo; communities (1956). Similar claims were made by Underwood (1976, 1988). If we are to use computers for linguistic atlases, we have
