Thin film resonator having stacked acoustic reflecting impedance matching layers and method

Lawrence N. Dworsky; Luke C B Mang

A frequency selective component and a method for making a frequency selective component. The frequency selective component includes a substrate having at least a first surface and an acoustic impedance transformer coupled to the substrate. The acoustic impedance transformer transforms an acoustic impedance of the substrate to a second acoustic impedance. The acoustic resonator further includes a mechanical resonator disposed on the acoustic impedance transformer. The acoustic resonator provides a frequency selection function.

A comparison of band pass filter technologies for communications system applications

Lawrence N. Dworsky

Characteristics of electromagnetic and piezoelectric bandpass filters are discussed from the perspective of (commercial) radio land mobile communication systems. Since the mass marketing of hand-held communications products such as portable cellular telephones and radio pagers are driving the need for small, low-loss, low-cost filter technologies, emphasis is placed upon the capabilities and limitations of the various filter types considered in the light of these criteria. The discussions are limited to narrowband (< approximately 5% relative bandwidth) filters.<<ETX>>

A simple model for quartz resonator low level drive sensitivity

Lawrence N. Dworsky; R. Kinsman

The nature of the observed phenomenon of starting resistance is reviewed, along with the accompanying experimental evidence of high drive level altering and sometimes curing the malady. A simple phenomenological model is proposed, and it is shown that this model predicts all of the observed properties of starting resistance with the exception of high drive curing. Mechanisms for this case which are consistent with the model are suggested. Device changes due to high drive which would account for the observed characteristics and fit within the assumptions of the model are discussed.<<ETX>>
