1 Revision of a paper presented at the National Convention of the Council for Exceptional Children, St. Louis, April 1967. The data reported are part of Cooperative Research Project 6-8720, Scales and Procedures for Assessing SocialPsychological Characteristics of Visually Impaired and Hearing Impaired Students, from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, U.S. Office of Education. The consultation and research assistance of Wilbur B. Brookover, Michigan State University, William McClure, Florida School for the Deaf, Alfred Lamb, Indiana School for the Deaf, and Thomas Poulos, Michigan School for the Deaf, are gratefully acknowledged. The study was designed to determine the predictive validity of 5 kinesio-perceptual (KP) items (dynamic equilibrium, reaction time, agility, static equilibrium, and KP matching) contained in a test battery (KPT) administered to 120 institutionalized retarded children, chronological ages (CA) 8 to 20 yr. When multiple linear regression analysis was used to predict scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (IQ) the multiple correlation was .75 (R2 = .57, p = .001). Knowledge of CA and sex added only 1% to the total amount of IQ variance accounted for. A brief discussion of the conflict between the goals of developmental validation and prediction of intellective criteria was also presented.

Microcomputers are becoming an available technology for special education. The article describes the capabilities and features of basic microcomputer systems and describes special education applications: computer assisted instruction, prosthesis, testing, communication, and enhancing personal relations. Problems such as the availability of authoring languages, high quality educational software, and computer safety are described. To include information about what microcomputers can do and how they function is recommended for teacher education and in-service programs.

Statistical cartography, the production of statistical maps, has been widely used in fields such as medicine, geophysics, criminology, linguistics, and biology to address questions concerning the spatial distribution of phenomena. Recent advances in computer hardware and software have made it possible to produce statistical maps rapidly and economically. Few applications of the methodology in special ecuation research and planning have yet surfaced, however. The article describes the basic methods and procedures of computerized statistical cartography and provides several suggestions for its application in special education research and planning, both state and national. A study of regional low-incidence handicap service patterns is presented. Included are examples of special education service maps produced by computer.
