ENTRE DENÚNCIAS E PROPOSTAS. O tráfico de brancas e os bastidores migratórios em obras de época

Lená Medeiros de Menezes

The article addresses the trafficking of women (white traffic), for prostitution, with the temporal parameters the so-called Great Immigration to Brazil (late nineteenth and early twentieth century). His proposal is to establish a dialogue with writers of the period, giving visibility to the factors that led to the internationalization of prostitution and agency network intricacies that ignored borders. The sources used include police cases against pimps and complaints and proposals made by doctors, lawyers and journalists. Methodological options include content analysis of the texts and the evidentiary method, which allows a gaze focused on dialogue between structural logic and everyday practices. The ultimate goal is to present a reinterpretation of a theme that far from getting lost in the past, presents itself as a history of long-term, always ready to invade the scenes of mass displacements that characterize modern times.

Aspectos da desordem urbana: imigrantes ibéricos e a contravenção no Rio de Janeiro republicano (1880-1930)

Érica Sarmiento; Lená Medeiros de Menezes

The Iberian immigration in Rio de Janeiro in the period of the First Massive Immigration (1880-1930) occupied a prominent position in the main districts of the city. In the popular spaces and everyday tensions that were part of the urban scene, Portuguese and Spanish have created ethnic settlements and concentrated in certain trades and professions, forming networks of solidarity. The participation in activities deemed illegal, eminently popular character, as the Brazil’s Clandestine Lottery, demonstrates the interplay of these groups with Rio society and their integration and adaptation in the city. Through historical sources as the police processes and expulsion procedures, this study seeks to rebuild some stories of encounters and conflicts, support and repulsion, which involved the Iberian immigrants.
