Environmental changes close to the Lower–Middle Devonian boundary; the Basal Choteč Event in the Prague Basin (Czech Republic)

The Basal Choteč or jugleri Event, close above the Lower–Middle Devonian boundary, has been regarded as a minor but important eustatic transgressive event, which is characterized by significant environmental changes, faunal extinction, appearance of new forms, and maximum radiation, particularly among the goniatites. This study contributes to a more precise stratigraphic allocation of the event, and provides a reconstruction of paleoenvironmental settings in the type area of the event, the Prague Basin (Czech Republic). The beginning of a transgression is recorded already in the Třebotov Limestone (partitus Zone, Eifelian, early Middle Devonian). The basin-wide change in the sedimentation pattern (onset of peloidal and crinoidal grainstones (calciturbidites) of the Choteč Formation) corresponding to the uppermost partitus and costatus conodont zones, base of Nowakia (Dmitriella) sulcatasulcata dacryoconarid Zone, and Pinacitesjugleri goniatite Zone is interpreted here to be linked to a maximum flooding of the basin. A hypothesis of enhanced nutrient load during sedimentation of the Choteč Formation is suggested here as a triggering mechanism for intense micritization and peloid formation and prasinophyte blooms, which could be, along with a greater depositional depth, responsible for oxygen deficiency and consequent reduction of diversity and habitat tracking among benthic invertebrates.

The Odivelas Limestone: evidence for a Middle Devonian reef system in western Ossa-Morena Zone (Portugal) The Odivelas Limestone constitutes one of the few records of Middle Devonian sedimentation in the western Ossa-Morena Zone. Although deformed and metamorphosed the limestones have an abundant fossil content which allows their positioning as late Eifelian/early Givetian in age and to relate the reef fauna with the typical Rhenish facies for the same time period. Magnetic susceptibility analysis was attempted and is in agreement with the biostratigraphy, but the limited extent of sections and the metamorphism precludes firm correlations. The field evidence, petrographic and geochemical analysis point to a close paleogeographical relation and dependence of the reef system on volcanic structures which are included in the Beja Igneous Complex. The age of part of the volcanic and sub-volcanic suite of this complex is thus constrained.

Integrated Magnetic Susceptibility and Geochemical Record of δ13C Anomalies in the Berriasian and Valanginian Sections from the Tethyan Domain (Western Carpathians, Poland)

New magnetic susceptibility (MS), stable isotope, and geochemical (major and trace elements) data are presented from the three Berriasian–Valanginian pelagic sections from the Western Carpathians of Poland. MS correlates well with lithogenic influx and reflects exactly the short-term transgressive–regressive cycles in the interval below the δ13C event (the Weissert event) recorded in the upper Valanginian. The pattern of changes in MS recorded for the Weissert event is more complicated, most probably also reflecting significant climatic changes. Redox-sensitive indicators (Th/U, Ce/Ce*) account for significantly oxygen-depleted conditions combined with relatively low content of productivity indicators (Al-normalized P, Ba, and Cu).
