Prophylactic treatment of peptic ulcers produced experimentally by cinchophen

Leonard K. Stalker; Jesse L. Bollman; Frank C. Mann

Some benefit was found from a diet of milk alone and from the use of a duodenal extract in the prophylactic treatment of peptic ulcers produced experimentally by the administration of cinchophen. Mucin appeared to be definitely beneficial in some cases but in others a chronic ulcer developed similar to those found in control animals fed cinchophen without prophylactic treatment. A chronic lesion was not produced in the presence of alkali-milk diet therapy. No benefit was observed from intramuscular injections of histidine monohydrochloride.

Mental disorders associated with hyperthyroidism

Elbert T. Rulison; John D. White; Leonard K. Stalker

Abstract Hyperthyroidism is not specifically associated with one type of psychosis. Toxic exhaustive reactions and acute delirium are probably the most common mental disturbances complicating thyroid hyperfunction. The content of the psychoses does not differ essentially from that of similar types of psychoses in individuals without hyperthyroidism. When a psychosis occurs in the presence of hyperthyroidism it should not be considered a definite contraindication to surgery. The prognosis of the psychosis probably depends upon the ratio of thyroid toxicity to the underlying mental instability of the patient.

Acute retrocecal appendicitis

Leonard K. Stalker; Peter G. Brandetsas

Abstract An analysis has been made of the problem of acute retrocecal appendicitis, with discussion of the diagnostic problems presented. A review of certain illustrative cases was selected from a group of fifty-two consecutively treated patients.

Barium as a factor in intestinal obstruction.

Leonard K. Stalker

Abstract A case has been reported in which barium administered by mouth during the course of roentgenographic examination of the gastrointestinal tract proved to be a factor in the intestinal obstruction.

Effect of Cinchophen on the Liver and Other Tissues of the Dog.

Leonard K. Stalker; Jesse L. Bollman; Frank C. Mann

During a study of peptic ulcers produced by the administration of cinchophen we had the opportunity of studying the effects of large amounts of cinchophen on the liver and other organs of the dog. In view of the divergence of opinions regarding the effects of cinchophen on the livers of experimental animals, it seems advisable to record our observations on this subject. Specimens of liver were obtained from 131 dogs which were normal in every case before the experiment was begun. They were given the routine kennel care and were fed a balanced diet of a calculated weighed amount sufficient for their caloric requirements. Cinchophen was for the most part administered orally; in a few cases it was given rectally, parenterally, or through intestinal fistulas. Thirty-one dogs, whose average weight was 17 kg., were daily given 2 gm. of cinchophen well mixed with their food for a period varying from 3 to 60 days. The average length of time over which administration of the drug to this group was continued was 27 days; the average total dose of cinchophen was 50 gm. Fifty-four dogs were given 2 gm. of cinchophen daily, with an occasional rest day, for an average of 30 days but in a few cases over a period of time as long as 114 days. To this group the amount of cinchophen administered varied from 36 to 228 gm. during the course of treatment. Thirteen dogs, whose average weight was 13 kg., were given varying doses of cinchophen by routes other than by mouth, the usual dose exceeding 1 gm. daily. To members of this group an average of 21 gm. of the drug was given in an average of 13 days.

Varicose veins: Ten years' observation on treatment

Leonard K. Stalker

Abstract Certain observations made in the surgical treatment of varicose veins during the past ten years have been reviewed. The injection of a sclerosing solution at the time of surgery does not seem advisable in all cases. Those cases in which this is not advisable have been mentioned. The importance of complete sclerosing obliteration of the varicosities subsequent to surgery has been stressed. When large communicating veins can be demonstrated, separate division and ligation should be done. When a hugely dilated saphenous vein is present, segmental ligation seems advisable. The importance of treatment of the lesser saphenous vein has been stressed.

The Association of diverticulitis and carcinoma of the colon

Leonard K. Stalker; Elbert T. Rulison; John D. White

Association of diverticulitis and carcinoma of the colon is rarely seen. There is no reason for believing that diverticulitis is a precursor of cancer. Clinical differentiation between diverticulitis and cancer of the colon is frequently difficult to make. A case is here reported in which diverticulitis and carcinoma of the sigmoid were present together.

Management of varicose veins and their related problems

Leonard K. Stalker

Abstract A discussion of some of the current opinions in reference to the management of varicose veins and the related problems has been made. An adequate combined division and ligation of the great saphenous vein at the saphenofemoral junction is the basis of all surgical treatment today. This combined with the stripping operation is not the ultimate treatment for varicosities but it is the best treatment so far. Various factors in the diagnosis and treatment of the indurated and ulcerated leg have been discussed. Each vascular problem must be considered as an individual case and all measures available should be utilized in their treatment.

Diagnosis of acute conditions within the abdomen in the presence of diabetes

John D. White; Leonard K. Stalker

Abstract Abdominal signs and symptoms are frequently seen in individuals with diabetic acidosis. The differentiation between this picture and a co-existing, acute condition within the abdomen may at times be difficult and surgical intervention necessary. No satisfactory explanation exists for the abdominal symptoms in acidosis, but the association of anoxemia is thought to be important. A case in which a diabetic acidosis existed and at operation no intra-abdominal lesion was demonstrated, was reported.
