In this article, we systematize a contemporary discussion concerning a possible shortage of engineers in Brazilian society. Based on the literature, we list the assumptions that could characterize scarcity and we have looked for data that allow us to test these hypotheses. The data do not support the idea of a general shortage of engineers.

An academic spin-off is a new type of firm that often comes to exploit a radical innovation capable of creating a new market or defying the rules of an established industry. Employing a combination of literature research, multiple case studies and interventions based on action research, this study aims to contribute in two ways to the literature on innovation and entrepreneurship. First, it proposes a concept of innovation as a transition in three dimensions: level (deviation from a rule), length (number of features and actors involved) and trajectory (sequence of innovations over time). The second contribution is building a framework that has a non-linear and recursive structure and integrates innovation with planning and the development of spin-offs, thereby addressing uncertainty management. Finally, it is concluded that the proposed framework can help entrepreneurs, investors and universities with the challenge of creating a firm to exploit a radical innovation.

The role of product platforms within companies and in mediating the activities of business conglomerates or ecosystems has been widely recognized as being of great importance to the management processes of new businesses, to the development of new products, and to innovation. The objective of the present work is to help understanding what the benefits found by Brazilian software companies are in the use of platforms for software development and associated services. Firstly, an analysis of the evolution of the scientific research on the concept of “platform” was carried out. A bibliometric methodology was employed for a quantitative analysis and identification of the most relevant references, and a subsequent qualitative content analysis allowed establishing an analysis model that supported the case study. Analyzing a leading Brazilian company in the national market of software production, the benefits gained by this company, which uses a platform as the basis of its products, were observed go beyond the improvement of its capacity to produce software efficiently, also allowing the construction of a business model that stimulates external suppliers to develop solutions that complement the companys product portfolio.
