Laryngoscope | 1978

Compound frontal sinus injuries with intracranial penetration.

Paul J. Donald; Leslie Bernstein

Extensive trauma to the forehead, resulting in large penetrating wounds of the frontal sinus that extend into the frontal lobes of the brain, has traditionally been treated by frontal sinus ablation. Although this operation eliminates dead space, it leaves the patient with a depressed area in the forehead with little protection for the brain.

Laryngoscope | 1983

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presenting as adult osteomalacia: case report and review of the literature.

Michael S. Linsey; Wynn Smith; Hiroshi Yamauchi; Leslie Bernstein

This is a report of a 54‐year‐old woman who presented with unexplained osteomalacia, which proved to be due to a nasopharyngeal angiofibroma. A summary of published case reports is presented and postulated mechanisms of oncogenic osteomalacia are reviewed.

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery | 1978

Transpalatal excision of the odontoid process.

Paul J. Donald; Leslie Bernstein

A patient with platybasia of the skull and temporomandibular joint ankylosis is presented. Relief of brain stem compression by the impingement of the odontoid through a soft, hypoplastic clivus was done by first doing a mandibular condylectomy to open the mouth. A transoral-transpharyngeal route was then employed to excise the odontoid process.

Fundamentals of Facial Rhytidoplasfy

Leslie Bernstein

Educational objectives: To select and evaluate candidates for various facial procedures, such as blepharoplasty, facelift, brow lift, liposuction, and skin peeling, and to improve surgical techniques, with regard to better results and the avoidance of complications.

Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery | 1995

Fundamentals of Rhinoplasty

Leslie Bernstein

Educational objectives: To select and evaluate candidates for rhinoplasty and plan the steps of the proposed operation, and to carry out the steps of the surgery in a sequential, progressive technique, which should preclude an undesirable, radical result.

Craniofacial Anomalies: New Perspectives,

Leslie Bernstein

This is another publication in the Birth Defects: Original Article Series of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. Unlike previous publications, which dealt simply with problem areas, this volume includes a diversity of topics. Thus, this book contains the following disease subjects: the genetic and immunologic implications of white hair, concepts related to adaptation of neuromuscular function and craniofacial morphology, the temporal muscle in craniosynostosis, palatal and pharyngeal anomalies in craniofacial syndromes, orodental findings in genetic disorders, cephalometric findings in craniofrontonasal dysplasia and other syndromes, and ultrasonography for prenatal diagnosis of facial clefts. In all, this publication is an excellent contribution to the wide topic of craniofacial anomalies. It should contribute a great deal to anyone who is interested in this fascinating subject.

Etiology of Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate, vol 46, Progress in Clinical and Biological Research

Leslie Bernstein

This volume contains the proceedings of a workshop held at Aislie House, Virginia, which was sponsored by the National Institute of Dental Research and the Society of Craniofacial Genetics. The contributors brought expertise from many diverse disciplines, including animal and human genetics, immunogenetics, biochemistry, developmental biology, mathematical and population genetics, statistics, epidemiology, and clinical practice. As stated in the preface, their charge was to review the state of our knowledge regarding the etiology of facial clefting, point out the deficiencies, and suggest new research directions. The authors examine all possible environmental and genetic causes of cleft lip and cleft palate. Contributors discuss such topics as animal models for clefting, population studies of incidence and distribution of cleft lip and palate, mathematical models of human clefts, and genetic and phenotypic markers of clefting. In addition to formal papers, the book is distinguished by the unusual general discussions and critiques that follow
