Population and Development Review | 1985
K. Maudood Elahi; Leszek A. Kosinski
This volume is an outcome of the 1980 Karachi meeting of the International Geographic Union Commission of Population Geography. It offers only a selection of the original papers all substantially edited and thoroughly revised and brings them together with additionally solicited texts. The monograph includes 14 chapters 3 of which are concerned with overall patterns of population change in South Asia and 11 with individual countries of the region. The introduction discusses comparative growth of population in 5 South Asian countries (India Pakistan Bangladesh Nepal and Sri Lanka) and focuses on 3 aspects of population redistribution in the region: international migration (considerable in absolute numbers but insignificant within the overall population change) the urbanization process (in which migration is quite important) and governments perceptions and policies. Specific problems of tribal populations flood related migration and refugee resettlement are covered for India. A general chapter on population trends in Nepal is followed by a more specific treatment of resettlement policies in that country. For Sri Lanka there are 3 complementary contributions dealing with general trends population policies and the urbanization process. An overall review of trends in population redistribution in Pakistan between 1951 and 1981 is supplemented by a case study of population mobility in the North West Frontier Province of the country. Finally refugee questions are discussed in detail for Bangladesh. It is hoped that this collection will be of value to those interested in the specific issue of population redistribution and development in South Asia as seen by authors from that area.

David T. Herbert; Wilbur Zelinksy; Leszek A. Kosinski
Selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Book for 1992. In this landmark study, two eminent geographers present the first comparative, cross-national analysis of emergency evacuations engendered by every sort of disaster: military, natural, and industrial. Zelinsky and Kosinski have selected 27 evacuations of cities due to actual or anticipated emergencies during the past fifty years, from the Ohio River Flood of 1937 to the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986.
