This paper reports two noctuid moths, Atrachea japonica (Leech, 1889) and Autographa macrogamma (Eversmann, 1842) that are new to the Chinese fauna. They are distributed in Tahe County in Daxing’anling forest region, China. In addition, a new recourd species, Neustrotia rectilineata Ueda, 1987, which is described from Mt, Sudo-san, Korea and Hotso, Prov. Taiwan, is newly added to continental fauna of the family Noctuidae s.l.. The external characteristics, genitalia photos, and the distributional ranges of those species are provided, and all the materials examined in this study are deposited in the collection of the Entomological Laboratory, Forestry college of Northeast Forestry University, Harbin, China.

Observations on life cycle, habits and characteristics ofBiston betularia (L.), which is a major pest infecting birch, were made in Daxing’an Mountain forest area, Heilongjiang Province during 1997–1998. In this area, the pest has one generation per year and overwinters as eggs in cracks of the lower part of stem. Adults emerge from mid-July to late August, and the damage of larvae occurs mainly in May and June. Life cycle table ofBiston betularia was given and control suggestions were made in this paper.

Stem implants of acephate were tentatively used to control cone and seed insects in Northeastern China in 1993. Experiments considered in a Siberian larch seed orchard and mother-tree stands of Korean pine and Korean spruce that promising control of major cone pests, including cone flies, cone-worms and seed-worms, was obtained in all of the conifer species but treatment did not reduce significantly damage due to seed chalcids. Acephate implants did not seem to affect seed germination.
