We study the adsorption behaviors of dodecahydroxylated-fullerene C 60 (OH) 12 at the air}water interface. With the hydrophilicity imposed by the 12 hydroxy groups randomly bounded on the C 60 cage, C 60 (OH) 12 can dissolve in water slightly. Surface pressure-area isotherms, Brewster angle microscopy, and neutron re#ection results for the aqueous solutions of C 60 (OH) 12 provide consistent evidence of adsorbed C 60 (OH) 12 monolayers at the air}water interface. A Langmuir}Blodgett lm of C 60 (OH) 12 , prepared from the sample solution with the vertical dipping method, is examined using atomic force microscopy. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Fullerene-based star ionomer C60[CO(CH2)5O(CH2)4SO3Na]6(FC10S), with six sodium-dodecyl-sulfate-like arms randomly bonded on the fullerene, has been synthesized. This novel molecule has a high water solubility and a structural shape resembling the skeleton of a micelle of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). We study aqueous mixtures of the C60-based ionomers and SDS using small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). With a selected deuteration of SDS, we have identified the formation of complex aggregates of FC10S with SDS in the mixtures. The structural information of the complex aggregates is extracted from the SANS and SAXS data measured for the mixtures. On the average, the complex aggregates observed have a cylinder-like shape with a radius of 19A and a length of ≈100A for the sample mixtures containing 2.3 or 1.2mM of FC10S and 6mM of SDS. The mean aggregation numbers of FC10S and SDS in each complex aggregate are 15 and 11, respectively.

SANS study on a fullerenol-based poly(urethane-ether) elastomer

Abstract The structure of a fullerenol hypercrosslinked poly(urethane–ether) elastomer has been characterized by small angle neutron scattering. The observed scattering profile indicates an isotropic dispersion of the crosslinking agents, fullerenols C 60 (OH) 12 , in the matrix of poly(urethane–ether) (PU). The mean spacing between the crosslinking sites, obtained from the correlation function is 150xa0A, which is related to the conformation of the PU arms in the network. The same elastomer has also been measured under an uniaxial stretch.
