The Beijing Spectrometer III (BESIII) is a general-purpose detector used for the study of τ-charm physics at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider II (BEPCII). This paper presents our studies of the dE/dx measurement in the drift chamber of BESIII, which is important for the identification of charged particles. Corrections applied to the dE/dx measurement in data reconstruction are discussed. After our current dE/dx calibration, a resolution of about 6% has been obtained for minimum ionization particles, and a 3σ K/π separation is obtained for momenta up to 760 MeV/c. These results meet the design goals of the BESIII drift chamber.

The principle of the method for the BESIII event start time determination and the code construction are described. The investigation of influence of the noise, the method of rejecting noise and the performance checking by the Monte Carlo physics data sample are also presented. The preliminary results got from the Monte Carlo simulation are presented, the reconstruction efficiency of J/ψ → anything events at noise level 0~60% can achieve above 99%, and the error rate is below 1%.

The results of a study of event tagging strategies for elementary physics processes in the τ-charm region are presented. The algorithm for online event filtering is optimized by adopting the information provided by different sub-detectors according to their strengths and capacities. The algorithm is tested with various generated physics and background events. The results indicate that the algorithm satisfies the requirements of BESIII physics analysis and its DAQ system.

This paper focuses mainly on the vertex reconstruction of resonance particles with a relatively long lifetime such as K0S, Λ, as well as on lifetime measurements using a 3-dimensional fit. The kinematic constraints between the production and decay vertices and the decay vertex fitting algorithm based on the least squares method are both presented. Reconstruction efficiencies including experimental resolutions are discussed. The results and systematic errors are calculated based on a Monte Carlo simulation.

A track fitting algorithm based on the Kalman filter method has been developed for BESIII of BEPCII. The effects of multiple scattering and energy loss when the charged particles go through the detector, non-uniformity of magnetic field (NUMF) and wire sag, etc., have been carefully handled. This algorithm works well and the performance satisfies the physical requirements tested by the simulation data.

We describe the algorithm to reconstruct the charged tracks for BESIII main drift chamber at BEPCII, including the track finding and fitting. With a new method of the Track Segment Finder (TSF), the results of present study indicate that the algorithm can reconstruct the charged tracks over a wide range of momentum with high efficiency, while improving the robustness against the background noise in the drift chamber. The overall performances, including spatial resolution, momentum resolution and secondary vertices reconstruction efficiency, etc. satisfy the requirements of BESIII experiment.

The Study of the Phase of Bose–Einstein Condensate*

Zhou Xiao-Ji; Wang Yi-qiu; Li Wei-Dong

We first propose to study the phase of Bose-Einstein condensate in the phase space. The mean value of the phase and the phase fluctuation of Bose-Einstein condensate are considered, and their explicit expressions are given with the Thomas-Fermi approximation. For a finite atom number, we find that the phase of condensate is determined by the oscillation frequency of the harmonic confining potential at certain time. The effects of the atom number and time on the phase of condensate are also discussed for the same kinds of atoms.

Based on real data, a new parameterized model of the main drift chamber response is proposed. In this model, we tune the ratio of good hits and the residual distribution separately. By data quality checking, the difference between simulation and data in track reconstruction efficiency reduces from 1% to 0.5% averagely for the pion in J/psi ->pi(+)pi(-)pi(0), and the momentum resolution agreement improves significantly for the proton in J/psi -> p (p) over bar.

In order to overcome the difficulty brought by the circling charged tracks with transverse momentum less than 120 MeV in the BESⅢ Main Drift Chamber (MDC), a specialized method called TCurlFinder was developed. This tracking method focuses on the charged track reconstruction under 120 MeV and posses...

Liang Yu-Tie; Mao Ya-Jun; You Zheng-Yun; Li Wei-Dong; Bian Jian-Ming; Cao Guo-Fu; Cao Xue-Xiang; Chen Shen-Jian; Deng Zi-Yan; Fu Cheng-Dong; Gao Yuan-Ning; Han Lei; Han Shao-Qing; He Kang-Lin; He Miao; Hu Ji-Feng; Hu Xiao-Wei; Huang Bin; Huang Xing-Tao; Jia Lu-Kui; Ji Xiao-Bin; Li Haibo; Liu Bei-Jiang; Liu Chun-Xiu; Liu Huai-Min; Liu Ying; Liu Yong; Luo Tao; Ma Qiu-Mei; Ma Xiang

Cosmic-ray data of 90 M events have been collected and used for calibration, alignment as well as detector tuning. A special tracking algorithm for the BESⅢ muon counter is developed and verified with Monte-Carlo simulation and then further confirmed with the cosmic-ray data. The obtained strip resolutions are in good agreement with the design values. A new alignment approach for the BESⅢ muon counter is confirmed with the cosmic-ray data and proposed to be used in future analysis of experimental data.
