Fabiana B. Drago; Lía Inés Lunaschi; Maria Schenone

Thirteen specimens of Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789) from three areas of the Chaquena Subregion of Argentina were examined for digeneans. Ten species were found: four diplostomids ( Austrodiplostomum mordax , A. ostrowskiae , Tylodelphys adulta and Hysteromorpha triloba ), three echinostomatids ( Drepanocephalus spathans , Paryphostomum segregatum , and P . parvicephalum ), one strigeid ( Strigea falconis brasiliana ), one psilostomid ( Ribeiroia ondatrae ) and one prosthogonimid ( Prosthogonimus ovatus ). Tylodelphys adulta and S. f. brasiliana are reported for the first time as parasites of P. brasilianus and new geographical records are presented.

Lía Inés Lunaschi; Fabiana B. Drago

The aim of this paper is to increase the knowledge on the diversity of digenean parasites in ophidians and anurans from northeastern Argentina. Specimens of the snakes Eunectes notaeus , Hydrodynastes gigas , Micrurus corallinus , Philodryas sp. and Sibynomorphus sp., and the anurans Rhinella schneideri , Phyllomedusa azurea and Leptodactylus latrans were examined. Twelve digenean species were identified: Catadiscus corderoi Mane-Garzon, 1958, Catadiscus dolichocotyle (Cohn, 1903), Catadiscus uruguayensis Freitas & Lent, 1939, Choledocystus elegans (Travassos, 1926), Gorgoderina parvicava Travassos, 1922, Haplometroides buccicola Odhner, 1911, Heterodiplostomum lanceolatum Dubois, 1936, Infidum similis Travassos, 1916, Mesocoelium monas (Rudolphi, 1819), Plagiorchis luehei (Travassos, 1927), Telorchis clava (Diesing, 1850) and Travtrema stenocotyle (Cohn, 1902). New host species and/or new locality records from Argentina are presented.

Digenean parasites of Cariama cristata (Aves, Gruiformes) from Formosa Province, Argentina, with the description of a new species of the genus Strigea

Lía Inés Lunaschi; Fabiana B. Drago

A new strigeid digenean, Strigea inflecta sp. nov., is described from the small intestine of the Red-legged Seriema, Cariama cristata (L.) (Gruiformes, Cariamidae) from Formosa Province, Argentina. This species is characterized by having a body plump, a cup-shaped forebody with a large opening, a sacciform hindbody, without a neck region and strongly curved dorsally, a poorly delimited copulatory bursa, wider than longer, a shallow and asymmetrical genital atrium, and a genital cone well delimited from body parenchyma, strongly muscular, inclined towards the surface ventral of the body. Another digenean species collected from Red-legged Seriema, Brachylaima yupanquii Freitas, Kohn et Ibáñez, 1967 (Brachylaimidae) is described with the addition of new morphological characters and morphometrical data. This species is reported for the first time in Argentina and C. cristata represents a new host record.

A new species of Parastrigea (Digenea, Strigeidae) endoparasite of Buteogallus urubitinga (Aves, Accipitridae) from Argentina

Fabiana B. Drago; Lía Inés Lunaschi

SummaryA new strigeid digenean, Parastrigea macrobursa n. sp., is described from specimens recovered from the small intestine of the great black-hawk, Buteogallus urubitinga (Aves: Accipitridae), from Formosa Province, Argentina. The new species is characterized by having a tulip-shaped forebody, a hindbody without neck region, a large, well delimited copulatory bursa, and a very deep genital atrium. Three species of Parastrigea share the shape of the copulatory bursa namely P. faini, P. astridae and P. tulipoides. Parastrigea faini and P. astridae differ mainly from the new species by having the forebody strongly divided in two regions and very developed lateral expansions, and Parastrigea tulipoides by having a long neck region and a longer body size. This new species represents the first record of a member of the genus Parastrigea Szidat, 1928 parasitizing birds from Argentina. A key is presented for the species currently recognized as valid in the genus.

Description of a new species of Tylodelphys (Digenea, Diplostomidae) in the wood stork, Mycteria americana (Aves, Ciconiidae) from Argentina

Fabiana B. Drago; Lía Inés Lunaschi

During the course of a study on the endohelminth parasites of birds, specimens of an undescribed species of Tylodelphys Diesing, 1850 (Diplostomidae) were collected from the wood stork, Mycteria americana L., from Formosa Province, Argentina. Tylodelphys brevis sp. nov. can be distinguished from the other Neotropical species of this genus, T. elongata, T. americana and T. adulta, principally by the smaller size of the body (570–851 μm), by the fewer eggs in the uterus (1–2) and by the smaller ratio of body to egg length (6–8). This is the second report of an adult of the genus Tylodelphys from Argentina and the first record of a digenean species parasitizing Mycteria americana in this country.

First record of Australapatemon burti and Paramonostomum pseudalveatum [Digenea] from Anas georgica [Aves, Anseriformes] in Chile

Fabiana B. Drago; Lía Inés Lunaschi; Ana Hinojosa-Sáez; Daniel González-Acuña

An examination of specimens of Anas georgica Gmelin (Anatidae) from Región del Bio-Bio and Región del Maule, Chile, revealed the presence of two digenean species reported for the Holartic Region: Australapatemon burti (Miller, 1923) Dubois, 1968 (Strigeidae) and Paramonostomum pseudalveatum Price, 1931 (Notocotylidae). A. burti parasitized ducks from both regions and P. pseudalveatum parasitized only ducks from Región del Bio-Bio. The digeneans were mounted in toto, described and illustrated. The morphology and dimensions of specimens studied correspond with their original descriptions and new morphometrical data and morphological characters are given. The reports of A. burti and P. pseudalveatum in A. georgica represent a new host record and the first record of the genera Australapatemon Sudarikov, 1959 and Paramonostomum Lühe, 1909 from Chile.

Digenean fauna in raptors from northeastern Argentina, with the description of a new species of Strigea (Digenea: Strigeidae).

Fabiana B. Drago; Lía Inés Lunaschi; Regina Draghi

The digenean fauna of six species of falconiform birds from northeastern Argentina is reported and a new species and several new hosts and geographical records are presented. Strigea proteolytica n. sp. (Strigeidae) is described from Buteogallus urubitinga and distinguished from their congeners by the combination of the following characters: plump body, conspicuous proteolytic gland, forebody with scarce vitelline glands, copulatory bursa with a well developed muscular ring (Ringnapf), and absence of true neck region in hindbody. Six previously known species are breifly described: Strigea falconis brasiliana Szidat, 1929 (Strigeidae) from Milvago chimachima and Caracara plancus; Neodiplostomum travassosi Dubois, 1937 from Buteogallus meridionalis; Tylodelphys brevis Drago & Lunaschi, 2008 and Posthodiplostomum macrocotyle Dubois, 1937 (Diplostomidae) from Busarellus nigricollis; Spaniometra variolaris (Fuhrmann, 1904) (Cyclocoelidae) and Megalophallus deblocki Kostadinova, Vaucher & Gibson, 2006 (Microphallidae) from Rostrhamus sociabilis. Literature records and information on distribution and host-parasite relationships is presented.

A new species of Centrorhynchus (Acanthocephala, Centrorhynchidae) endoparasite of Guira guira (Aves, Cuculidae) from Argentina

Lía Inés Lunaschi; Fabiana B. Drago

SummaryCentrorhynchus guira n. sp. is described from the guira cuckoo, Guira guira (Gmelin) (Cuculiformes: Cuculidae), from Argentina. This new species is characterized by the proboscis armament with 32 longitudinal rows (29 with 18 hooks per row and 3 with 19 hooks per row) and by the following hook pattern per row: 8–9 true hooks, 4 transitional hooks with lateral alate processes, and 6 spiniform hooks. The presence of transitional hooks is shared with five other Neotropical species in the genus: C. polymorphus, C. albidus, C. microcephalus, C. kuntzi and C. crotophagicola. Among these species, C. guira n. sp. most closely resembles C. kuntzi in having transitional hooks with lateral alate processes, however differs in the number of hooks per row and spiniform hooks. This is the first record of the genus Centrorhynchus parasitizing Argentinean birds. A key to the species of the Neotropical Centrorhynchus Lühe 1911 is presented.
