The Thickness Dependence of Optical Constants of Ultrathin Iron Films

Gao Shang; Lian Jie; Sun Xiao-Fen; Wang Xiao; Li Ping; Li Qing-Hao

Ultrathin iron films with different thicknesses from 7.1 to 51.7 nm are deposited by magnetron sputtering and covered by tantalum layers protecting them from being oxidized. These ultrathin iron films are studied by spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmittance measurement. An extra tantalum film is deposited under the same sputtering conditions and its optical constants and film thickness are obtained by a combination of ellipsometry and transmission measurement. After introducing these obtained optical constants and film thickness into the tantalum-iron film, the optical constants and film thicknesses of ultrathin iron films with different thicknesses are obtained. The results show that combining ellipsometry and transmission measurement improves the uniqueness of the obtained film thickness. The optical constants of ultrathin iron films depend strongly on film thicknesses. There is a broad absorption peak at about 370 nm and it shifts to 410 nm with film thickness decreasing.

TiO2 anode materials are prepared on ITO glass by spin-coated method. Dye-sensitized solar cells are assembled with these anodes and natural dyes extracted from radix ophiopogonis by different solvents. The formation and characterization of anode materials are confirmed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. Photovoltaic testing results show that energy conversion efficiency could reach 1.67% with fill factor of 0.51, open-circuit voltage of 457 mV, and short-circuit photocurrent density of 7.2 mA/cm2. The short-circuit photocurrent density can reach 7.6 mA/cm2 with efficiency of 1.33.

The longitudinal generalized magneto-optical ellipsometry (GME) method is extended to the measurement of three-layer ultrathin magnetic films. In this work, the theory of the reflection matrix is introduced into the GME measurement to obtain the reflective matrix parameters of ultrathin multilayer magnetic films with different thicknesses. After that, a spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to determine the optical parameter and the thickness of every layer of these samples, then the magneto-optical coupling constant of the multilayer magnetic ultrathin film can be obtained. After measurements of a series of ultrathin Fe films, the results show that the magneto-optical coupling constant Q is independent of the thickness of the magnetic film. The magneto-optical Kerr rotations and ellipticity are measured to confirm the validity of this experiment. Combined with the optical constants and the Q constant, the Kerr rotations and ellipticity are calculated in theory. The results show that the theoretical curve fits very well with the experimental data.

Based on the extended Huygens—Fresnel integral, analytical propagation expressions for the rms beam width and angular of partially coherent elegant Hermite cosh Gaussian beam (EHChGB) in non-Kolmogorov turbulence are derived. The effects of exponent value, inner and outer scales of non-Kolmogorov turbulence on partially coherent EHChGB are investigated quantitatively.

Cs+-K+ Exchange in Z-Cut KTiOPO4 Crystal Covered with Chromium Masking Layer

Zhang Rui-Feng; Lu Fei; Lian Jie; Liu Han-Ping; Liu Xiang-Zhi; Wang Liang-Ling; Wang Ke-Ming; Lu Qing-Ming

Cs+-K+ ion exchanges are performed on z-cut KTiOPO4 crystals with chromium coating covered. The temperature of ion exchange is 430°C, and the time range from 15min to 30 min. The dark mode spectra of the samples are measured by the prism coupling method. The channel structures on the samples are observed by a microscope and the near field pattern of the channel waveguides are measured by the end-fire coupling method. The refractive index of the samples increases and the increments at surface are modulated due to the existence of Cr film. In the region covered by Cr film, the refractive index of the samples at the surface increases dramatically in a shallow layer. The results of energy dispersive x-ray spectra indicate that in the region covered with Cr film, Cr ions participate in the ion exchange process, and enhance the refractive index. The results may provide a possibility that achieves index enhancement and Cr doping synchronically.

Different photoluminescence (PL) spectra are observed for rf magnetron sputtered polycrystalline Mg0.25Zn0.75O and Mg0.37Zn0.63O films on silicon substrates when excited by different wavelengths. When the excitation wavelength is 280 nm, a UV emission peak at 370 nm and a blue peak at 462 nm are generated for the Mg0.25Zn0.75O film, and those two peaks for the Mg0.37Zn0.63O film shift to 366 nm and 466 nm, respectively. The wavelengths of the PL peaks are related to the excitation wavelength. The stronger peak is obtained in the blue band due to a large number of oxygen vacancies caused by excess Zn and Mg atoms, while the weaker peak is obtained in the ultraviolet band.
