Synthetic ZrO2·nH2O was used for phosphate removal from aqueous solution. The optimum adsorbent dose obtained for phosphate adsorption on to hydrous zirconium oxide was 0.1 g. The kinetic process was described very well by a pseudo-second-order rate model. The phosphate adsorption tended to increase with the decrease in pH. The adsorption capacity increased from 61 to 66 mg g−1 when the temperature was increased from 298 to 338 K. A phosphate desorption of approximately 74% was obtained using water at pH 12.

AbstractThis work evaluated in a population of heroin and heroin plus cocaine human addicts:1.Norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (Epi), and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG) (the principal metabolite of brain NE) plasma levels;2.Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity; and3.3H-imipramine specific binding to the amine carrier in platelets. NE plasma levels were significantly lower in the short-term heroin user groups (1–3 and 4–6 yr), a finding not observed in both the long-term heroin user (>6 yr) and heroin plus cocaine user (>6 yr) groups. Epi levels changed in a similar manner, except that a significant increase was noted in heroin plus cocaine abusers. Conversely, dopamine and MHPG plasma levels increased with the duration of heroin use, and even more with cocaine abuse. Platelet MAO activity increased in all groups. Specific3H-imipramine binding sites showed an increase after 3 yr of heroin abuse and in all heroin plus cocaine addicts. In conclusion, short-term use of heroin decreases NE or Epi release, but with prolonged use, a slow adpatation occurs. In contrast, cocaine inhibits the neuronal Epi uptake, even in a situation of long duration of abuse. Probably the amine levels additionally regulate the amine carrier, resulting in changes that show a different pattern from major depression. These drugs of abuse may also influence directly or indirectly related enzymatic systems.

This work describes the preparation and characterization of cellulose/hydrous zirconium oxide composites prepared by conventional precipitation (PC) and homogeneous solution (PSH) from cellulose of the sugarcane bagasse and subsequent adsorption of phosphate ions. The composite obtained by the PC method was prepared using an ammonium solution as precipitating agent, whereas the composite obtained by the PSH method was prepared using urea as precipitating agent. The adsorption of phosphate ions was carried out reacting a KH2PO4 solution with ammonium molibdate under acid conditions to form an ammonium phosphomolybdic complex. The analyses to determine the concentration after adsorption were performed using UV-Vis at 880 nm. The results were satisfactory showing that the Cell/ ZrO2.nH2O composites obtained for both the methods presented good adsorption capacity.

This work reports the preparation, characterization and adsorption study of phosphate on hydrous tungsten oxides prepared by acid lixiviation of sodium tungstate. Part of this material (S1) was heated at 100 °C resulting in a material with differentiated characteristics (S1/D). The materials prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. Through the Q0 constant, related with the capacity of maximum adsorption, it was observed that the S1 sample presented better adsorption capacity than the S1/D. The DG values show that PO4-3 had been adsorbed through favorable reactions for all range of studied concentration.

This work reports the preparation, characterization and adsorption study of sulfate on hydrous zirconium oxides prepared by conventional and homogeneous solution precipitation methods. The materials prepared were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy and surface area measurements. Through the Q0 constant, related with the capacity of maximum adsorption, it was observed that the ZrO2.nH2O/PSH presented better adsorption capacity than ZrO2.nH2O/PC. By results of ΔG, it was observed that sulfate ions had been adsorbed through favorable reactions for all studied concentration ranges.
