The current trend in the mobile telecommunication market is to provide variable value-added data services over GPRS networks. The evolution from the GSM intelligent network (IN) system which has been widely deployed towards the GPRS IN system allows the operators to build new data services in a cost-effective, speedy way. In order to achieve this evolution smoothly and efficiently, it is necessary to consider the essential differences between the GSM IN and the GPRS IN which would do virtually effect on the system implementation. Those differences, together with the corresponding key technologies are discussed and analyzed in this paper. In this study, we also propose some value-added data services which can hopefully be deployed primarily on the commercial GPRS IN system. It is believed that some enhancements to the architecture specified by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) could enrich the features and types of the GPRS IN service, which are also topics for our further study.

The service triggering mechanism is important for service providing in intelligent network. This article describes and analyzes the intelligent service triggering mechanism in detail, and discusses how a user applies different services at the same time. After analyzing present GSM network service triggering problems, we develop a series of recommendations for the issue.

Based on the study of the characters on the trigger mechanism in wireless intelligent network and the current state of the location based services, the application for the LBS on WIN is analyzed, and the corresponding solutions are presented to the key technologies in the application. Finally, the development for the LBS on WIN is given compendiously.

Active networks seek to address the problem of lengthy network service and architecture evolution. Further study indicates that the introduction of active networks offers important opportunities for end-to-end performance improvement of distributed applications such as reliable multicast, self-organizing cache and active congestion control. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture for active networks based on plug-in, with which services can be introduced rapidly and flexibly. We highlight a new trigger mechanism which promises to be more flexible. We also describe a new model for a ticket ordering service over the Internet. The simulation result indicates that with active networks both latency at clients and load on servers are reduced.

The paper provides a new scheme of implementing a video on demand (VOD) service based on IN and B-ISDN integration architecture. In the scheme, the intelligent network manages and controls all the VOD systems in the B-ISDN network, which it is convenient for users to access the VOD service as well as VOD resources are utilized fully.
