This article proposes an experimental procedure to determine the enthalpy (and entropy) of vaporization of organic liquid compounds, by the Smith-Menzies (isoteniscope) method. The values of vapor pressure at different temperatures were obtained and ΔvH (and ΔvS) were graphically determined, using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The results for diethyl-ether, propanone, ethanol and n-hexane are in very good agreement with those from literature. A historical and thermodynamic discussion on equations that correlates vapor pressures and temperature precedes the experimental proposition.

Duval’s Semiotic Representations Theory was the guiding theoretical reference to the present research, which mainly focused on identifying the possible mental representations elaborated by first grade students of Elementary School, by means of records obtained in activities mediated by digital games. The data collection methods, carried out as a research at the Pedagogy undergraduate level as a requirement for graduation were video recordings and written registers produced by students. The data analysis identified the formulation and manifestation of mathematical concepts representations. The data were analyzed according to the methodology proposed by Henry (2006), under Duval’s theory (2003), and the results indicated that the registers presented by students had a close relationship with the competencies developed during the game and the resolution of written activities at the same category. Therefore, this research provides the study of situations involving students who must interpret and convert different types of semiotic representations in order to understand the complex process of mathematical concepts by children. This article presents, as a main objective, a methodological proposal for the teaching of Calculus in Biology courses. It highlights the attribution of biological meanings to variables and parameters in mathematical models within the study of population dynamics. Logistic equations have been used as a mathematical model that characterizes several types of population growth and other complexities of the biological phenomenon which may be better explained through mathematical concepts related to Differential Calculus. The relationship between Calculus and Biology may contribute towards the comprehension of complex biological phenomena that may be explained through simple mathematical equations.
