We demonstrate a compact pulse shaping system based on temporal stacking of pulses in fibres, by which synchronized pulses of ultrashort and nanosecond lasers can be obtained. The system may generate shape-controllable pulses with a fast rise time and high-resolution within a time window of ~2.2?ns by adjusting variable optical attenuators in the 32 fibre channels independently. With the help of optical amplifiers, the system delivers mJ-level pulses with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~35?dB.

The paper reports a high power, strictly single transverse mode ytterbium-doped large mode area fiber amplifier with backward pump scheme that produces near diffraction-limited, 2-ns shaped pulses with energies of 38µJ and peak powers in excess of 39kW at a repetition rate of 1Hz.

Theory and experimental results on the self-starting passive mode-locked Yb fiber ring laser generating short pulse are reported. The relations between the laser cavity parameters and mode-locked pulse characters are discussed. 980 nm LD pumped laser is used as the pump source and high concentration Yb 3+ -doped fiber is adopted as gain medium. Using the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) effect of the fiber, self-starting stable mode-locked pulse is obtained, with center wavelength of 1046nm, 3 dB bandwidth of 6.01 nm and 20 dB bandwidth of 16 nm. The mode-locked threshold power is 150 mW and output power is 26 mW with 50 MHz repetition rate.

In this paper, a highly-doped Yb/sup 3+/ fiber ring laser with short cavity has been presented. Comparing with normal Yb/sup 3+/ doped fiber, the relationships between the important characteristics of the Yb/sup 3+/ doped fiber laser such as threshold power, output power and laser parameters such as pump power, fiber length, couple ratio are analyzed. Numerical results are coincident with the experiment phenomenon.
