A 47-year-old white male was admitted with a chief complaint of pericarditis associated with rheumatoid arthritis. He has been admitted to the hospital several times within the past four months with a similar complaint. The pericarditis has been treated with chloramphenicol and erythromycin in the past; the patient is currently on chloramphenicol. His past medical history is significant for rheumatoid arthritis since 1972, associated with diffuse pulmonary and skin nodules and, most recently, the pericarditis. The patient has been treated with varying doses of prednisone each morning. Currently he is maintained on 20 mg of prednisone each morning. Several chest x-rays have been taken of this patient during his current stay.
