Measurements of high‐resolution ultraviolet‐visible absorption cross sections at stratospheric temperatures: 2. Chlorine dioxide

G. J. Frost; Lisa M. Goss; Veronica Vaida

Measurements of absorption cross sections of chlorine dioxide at 200 ± 20 K in the wavelength region 390–454 nm and at resolutions of 0.5 and 0.1 cm−1 are reported. The measurements were made on an experimental system combining high-resolution Fourier transform spectroscopy with supersonic jet expansions for sample preparation. This is the second of two papers describing this new technique for obtaining ultraviolet-visible absorption cross sections at high resolution and under atmospheric conditions.

Photooxidation of CS2 in the near‐ultraviolet and its atmospheric implications

Lisa M. Goss; G. J. Frost; D. J. Donaldson; Veronica Vaida

Sequential two photon photolysis of CS2 is discussed. Experiments in our lab and others have shown that photolysis of CS2 and O2 mixtures with light of energies below the SC-S bond dissociation energy produces OCS and SO2. We explain these results by the two photon sequential absorption and subsequent dissociation of CS2 to CS+S. The implications of this mechanism for the oxidation of CS2 in the atmosphere are discussed. Comparison to the currently accepted OH-initiated oxidation mechanism suggests that the sequential two-photon mechanism is too slow to be important in the atmosphere.
