Narratology, cultural psychology, and counseling research.

Lisa Tsoi Hoshmand

Narratological research is defined in relation to narrative theory and a cultural psychology perspective. Narrative concepts and methodology are explained, including the configural mode of understanding and principles of narrative analysis. Examples of application in psychological and counseling research are presented, with a discussion of issues of validity and voice. Suggestions are made on how narrative studies are to be evaluated. It is concluded that narratological research, with its focus on meanings and the storied nature of human life, can be especially useful in discovery research on identity development and the experience of counseling and life transitions.

Reconsidering action research as a guiding metaphor for professional psychology

Lisa Tsoi Hoshmand; Kathy O'Byrne

Action research is proposed as a more appropriate guiding metaphor for inquiry in professional psychology than applied research as traditionally conceived and practiced. Institutional, social, and ideological factors that affect the research practices of psychologists are considered in the context of contemporary knowledge production. The history of action research and its justification with a pragmatist epistemology are given. Its value in promoting a culture of inquiry based on collaborative norms and the reciprocity of theory and practice is argued. Specific characteristics of action research are explained and illustrated with examples from diverse areas of professional psychology. Implications for professional knowledge, research, training, and practice are discussed.

Conceptual and Action Frameworks for Peace

Lisa Tsoi Hoshmand; Jared D. Kass

An overview is provided on conceptual and action frameworks for peace, including contributions from different areas of psychology and several multidisciplinary perspectives. Approaches lacking in previous efforts, and some of the reasons for the limited success of peace work are identified. Two case examples are given to illustrate possibilities that have transformative potential, but are less often pursued by counseling professionals. Action research in communal dialogue and advocacy, and psychoeducation and mentoring in psychospiritual development are emphasized in promoting peaceful communities. Implications for our roles and functions as well as future theory, research and training are discussed.
