Study on the application of advanced broadband wireless mobile communication technology in smart grid

Zhao Feng; Liu Jianming; Hu dan; Zhang Yuexia

A communication network architecture for smart grid based on broadband wireless communication technology, such as 3G, LTE, LTE-Advanced and etc., is proposed in this paper. As the emergency communication has critical requirement of wireless communication technology in the smart grid, a solution for emergency communications is designed based on LTE technology. In the solution, the TDD mode is used, and SC-FDMA uplink is configured with more time slot resources than OFDMA downlink. Considering terminal limits, such as power and volume, the antenna configuration is 1 × 2 for uplink and 2 ×2 for downlink. At the same time, HARQ and the adaptive modulation and coding techniques are used to improve transmission reliability and efficiency. The link level simulation is used to evaluate the solution. With QPSK, 16QAM and 64QAM modulation based on 1×1 antenna and 1×2 MIMO, we simulate the uplink bit error rate based on different SNR. and compare different link performances under different modulation modes and antenna configurations.

Current situations and future developments of PLC technology in China

Liu Jianming; Zhao Bingzhen; Geng Liang; Yuan Zhou

This paper describes the current developments and deployments of PLC technology in China. A perspective introduction of the technology and industry situation is given, and an analysis on the main problems is made, focusing the technology and standardization. To solve the technical problems in certain circumstances, two solutions are discussed. One is the Quasi-Broadband PLC, which combines the advantages of both Broadband and Narrowband PLCs; the other one is the dual mode communication technology, which integrates PLC and wireless together. These two new-born technologies are expected to be an effective solution for most of smart grid applications, especially for the Advanced Metering Infrastructure.

The smart grid multi-utility services platform based on power fiber to the home

Liu Jianming; Zhao Bingzhen; Zhuang Zichao

Energy and information are two important parts of utility services. Smart grid applies the information and communications technology in the energy industry which will bring new methods and techniques for the application of the renewable energy, smart home and other smart services. By using Optical Fiber Composite Low-voltage Cable (OPLC), Power Fiber to the Home (PFTTH) realizes the transmission of energy and information over the same cable which will bring about the multipurpose use of resources. Therefore, PFTTH is the top choice for constructing the smart grid utilization network integrating energy industry and information industry which will not only meet the requirements of electric power supply of smart grid, but also meet the diversity requirements of the users including service providers and residential customers, such as leasing the optical fiber resources to the telecom operator and serving the ‘triple play’ to the residential customers. The PFTTH constructs a multi-utility services platform and the scope of the smart power consumption will be extended that both energy and information services can be provided simultaneously based on this platform. This paper describes the PFTTHs key technologies and its applications in the construction of smart grid, and then introduces the capability and the application scenario of the constructed platform. Finally, further open issues of the future development of PFTTH and the constructed platform are presented.

Zhang Suxiang; Zhang Dong; Zhao Bingzhen; Liu Jianming; Lin Hongyu

In order to give full play to the important role of the smart grid technology in the electrical power demand side management, according to the requirements of the national development and reform commission (NDRC)in China, empirical study for residential air conditioning load regulation and control problem had been completed by State Grid Corporation of China, respectively in four cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanchang, Yinchuan by choosing the part of the household to complete experiment. Electricity visualization and load optimization control strategy were applied to verify reducing electricity load peak-valley difference and analyzing the effect on electricity load as a result of user behavior change. In this paper, the main contents were discussed, which included the user group, incentive program, evaluation index, and data analysis comparison and response benefit evaluation. The empirical results show that the average air conditioner load of residents in Shanghai can reduce 41.03% during the peak hour. The empirical results verify the feasibility of management on load of residential air conditioner, the future implementation of the demand response measures will bring huge economic and environmental benefits for the country, society and consumers.

Low-voltage power line channel environment and the application analysis in smart grid

Yuan Zhou; Liu Jianming; Zhao Bingzhen

PLC (power line communication) technology is widely used in smart grid, this article details the power line channel characteristics of the environment, and its noise model can be divided into five categories. With analyzing their causes, bandwidth and respective property, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of the broadband and narrowband PLC technology in terms of the communication performance. And the major application scenarios in smart grid were divided into three different types: power information collection and the monitoring of electrical equipment, indoor devices interconnecting for smart home and broadband access. We are focusing on the topology and technical characteristics in the electric energy data acquisition system. Finally, the paper investigated the requirement of electric energy data acquisition system in China for smart grid.
