Taxonomic Notes on Ctenuchina, Euchromiina, and Phaegopterina (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Arctiinae, Arctiini)

Lívia R. Pinheiro; Marcelo Duarte

ABSTRACT Taxonomic notes on specific and generic names of Ctenuchina, Euchromiina, and Phaegopterina are provided. Five new synonymies are established: Cercopimorpha complexa Gaede (= Neacerea tetilla Dognin), Episcepsis scintillans Rothschild (= Heliura luctuosa Möschler), Eucereon theophanes Schaus (= Eucereon metoidesis Hampson), Delphyre leucomela Kaye (= Teucer apicalis Rothschild), and Cosmosoma albipuncta (= Cosmosoma harpalyce Schaus). We also propose the following nomenclatural changes: Ecdemus carmania (Druce) new combination, Episcepsis luctuosa (Möschler) new combination, and Pseudopharus nigra (Schaus) new combination. Additionally, lectotypes are designated for Neacerea tetilla Dognin, Pezaptera carmania Druce, Eucereon theophanes Schaus Delphyre leucomela Kaye, and Cosmosoma harpalyce Schaus.

Description of two new species of Nelphe Herrich-Schäffer, with comments on the genus (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Arctiinae, Arctiini, Ctenuchina)

Lívia R. Pinheiro

Two new species of Ctenuchina are described from Haiti and Dominica, respectively: Nelphe trimaculata Pinheiro, sp. nov., and N. dominica Pinheiro, sp. nov. Nelphe trimaculata differs from all other species of Nelphe in the three linear (as opposed to round) dark brown markings on cell CuP-1A and on the inner margin of the forewings. Nelphe dominica differs from other species placed in Nelphe in the sixth and seventh abdominal tergites, with orange scales covering not only the lateral surfaces of the tergites as it occurs in other species, but also the dorsal surface. Both new taxa are illustrated in habitus and genitalia, and comments on the genus, now with 13 valid species, are provided.

Description of three new species of Galethalea Butler, 1876 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae), with comments on the genus

Lívia R. Pinheiro

Galethalea portoricensis sp. nov. (Holotype male deposited in SMNS: Puerto Rico, 20.iii.1974, W. Plathsr. leg.), G. wolfei sp. nov. (Holotype male deposited in LACM: Colombia, 1.iv.1995, K. Wolfe et al. leg.), and G. machadoi sp. nov. (Holotype male deposited in SMNS: Ecuador, 23.x.2000, G. Brehm leg.) are described, all known only from males. G. machadoi sp. nov. and G. wolfei sp. nov. seem to be closely related to G. davidi Dognin, 1889 resur. stat., while G. portoricensis sp. nov. seems closer to the type species, G. pica (Walker, 1854). The three new species, plus G. davidi, are illustrated in habitus and genitalia, and comments on the genus Galethalea are provided, along with a key to the species currently placed in this genus.

Illustrated catalogue of Neotropical Ctenuchina, Euchromiina and Pericopina types (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Arctiinae, Arctiini) described by Hans Zerny, with discussion on their taxonomic status

Lívia R. Pinheiro; S. Gaal-Haszler

The type material of 54 names of Ctenuchina, Euchromiina and Pericopina proposed by Hans Zerny are treated. Of these, the material belonging to 43 of the 54 names, represented by 118 specimens, are deposited at the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW). The remaining are at the BMNH, NMNH, ZMHB or the ZSM, except for one of the species, which material was not traced. Comments on each name and its current taxonomic status, illustrations of holotypes and lectotypes, as well as information about their conservation status are provided. Lectotypes are designated for 23 of the taxa, and two new synonyms are proposed Eucyane variabilis flavofasciata and E. variabilis roseofasciata (=Hypocrita variabilis variabilis). Additionally, nine names have their taxonomic status changed: Correbia columbiana stat. nov., Autochloris jordani comb. nov., Chrostosoma exomelan comb. nov., C. flavothoracides comb. nov., C. pseudothia comb. nov., C. xanthomelan comb. nov., Ecdemus imbecillus comb. nov., Pseudomya clandestina comb. nov., and Uranophora felderi, comb. nov. Illustrations of the genitalia of some of the species are also provided.

Description of nine new species of Heliura Butler from South America (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Arctiinae, Arctiini, Ctenuchina)

Lívia R. Pinheiro; Marcelo Duarte

Summary Nine new species of the genus Heliura are described from Brazil (H. brasiliana sp. nov., H. olivocolora sp. nov., H. pulcherrima sp. nov., and H. laerteae sp. nov.), Ecuador (H. ecuadoris sp. nov.), Peru (H. flavipennis sp. nov. and H. peruana sp. nov.), and Venezuela (Heliura albiventris sp. nov. and H. juliani sp. nov.). They are illustrated in habitus and genitalia, and their phylogenetic affinities are discussed based on morphological evidence.

Immature stages of the moth Lobeza dentilinea (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae), with redescription of the species based on male and female morphology

Lívia R. Pinheiro; Renato Oliveira Ferreira da Silva; Marcelo Duarte

Egg and pupa of Lobeza dentilinea Schaus, 1901 are described and illustrated for the first time. Eggs are smooth, dome-shaped, and greenish at oviposition. Last instar larvae have an aposematic coloration and the chaetotaxy is very similar to other notodontines, except for the number of lateral setae: L. dentilinea has three instead of four lateral setae on abdominal segments A3-A6. Pupae are light brown and typical of the family, with the last abdominal segments broadly round. Evidence from the adult morphology supporting the placement of the genus in Notodontinae includes proboscis smaller than the length of the head, epiphysis with more than half the length of tibia, tarsal claws simple, and labial palpi short. Male and female are confidently associated, and a redescription of the species is presented based on both sexes. Larvae of L. dentilinea are here recorded feeding on a Melastomataceae.

Taxonomic notes and a new species of Episcepsis Butler, 1877 (Lepidoptera, Erebidae, Arctiinae, Arctiini, Ctenuchina)

Lívia R. Pinheiro; Elias da Costa Araujo Junior

Taxonomic notes and the description of a new species of Episcepsis are provided. The synonymization of Episcepsis aelia Schaus, 1889, from Mexico, under E. venata Butler, 1877, from the Brazilian Amazons, is revised. Genital morphology of males and females has shown the validity of E. aelia revis. stat. Additionally, the discovery of specimens from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest externally indistinguishable from both E. venata and E. aelia has led to the description of E. atlantica sp. nov. Finally, the following new combinations in Episcepsis are proposed: E. fumata (Rothschild), comb. nov., and E. coeruleocephala (Rothschild), comb. nov.

Annotated Catalogue with Illustrations of Ménétriés' Types of Ctenuchina and Euchromiina (Erebidae, Arctiinae, Arctiini) Deposited in the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg, Russia

Lívia R. Pinheiro; Marcelo Duarte

ABSTRACT. The types of Ctenuchina and Euchromiina that were described by E. Ménétriés, deposited at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences of St. Petersburg, are catalogued. All but one of the types are of names described from Brazil and collected during the Langsdorff expedition; the only non-Brazilian type was collected in California, USA. Lectotypes are designated for the following names: Laemocharis fasciatella, Charidea fastuosa, L. fulviventris, L. metallescens, L. ornata, Glaucopis rubroscapus, G. vidua vidua and G. vidua spiracula. The following new combinations are proposed: Poecilosoma fasciatella, stat. rev., Aethria ornata, and Xanthyda metallescens. Comments on each name are provided, as well as information on their current taxonomic status, illustrations of type specimens, and information about their conservation status.
