Er3+-doped halide modified tellurite glasses were synthesized by conventional melting and quenching method. The Judd–Ofelt analysis was performed on the absorption spectra and the transition probabilities, excited state lifetimes, and the branching ratios were calculated and discussed. The intense infrared and visible fluorescence spectra under 980 nm excitation were obtained. Strong upconversion signal was observed at pumping power as low as 30 mW in the glasses with halide ions. The upconversion mechanisms and power dependent intensities were discussed, which showed two-photon process are involved for the green and red emissions. The decay times of the emitting states and the corresponding quantum efficiency were determined and explained.

A new type of fluorophosphate glasses with high thulium doping concentration (up to 10u2002molu2009% Tm3+) is investigated. The intensive 1.8u2002μm fluorescence is demonstrated with lower concentration quenching. On the basis of the measured Raman spectroscopy, it is revealed that the glass structure will be changed when adding Tm3+ ions into fluorophosphate glasses. Besides, the Judd–Ofelt parameters and radiative properties are calculated and discussed based on Judd–Ofelt theory. And the absorption and emission cross-sections of F34→H36 transition are also calculated by using McCumber and Beer–Lambert theories.

The effect of Ga<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> addition on Raman scattering and thermal stability characteristics of Te O <inf>2</inf>-BaO-SrO-Nb<inf>2</inf>O<inf>5</inf> glass system was investigated. With increasing Ga<inf>2</inf>O<inf>3</inf> amount in the glass, there is only a little influence on the Raman scattering, but the thermal stability could be improved to a certain degree.

2μm emission spectra of Tm-Ho co-doped fluorophosphate glasses are measured and investigated. When doping 4mol% TmF<inf>3</inf> and 1mol%HoF<inf>3</inf>, the most intense 2.0μm emssion is achieved. Combining the energy transfer processes, the reason is discussed.
