Finite-size behaviour of generalized susceptibilities in the whole phase plane of the Potts model

Xue Pan; Yanhua Zhang; Lizhu Chen; M. Xu; Yuanfang Wu

We study the sign distribution of generalized magnetic susceptibilities in the temperature-external magnetic field plane using the three-dimensional three-state Potts model. We find that the sign of odd-order susceptibility is opposite in the symmetric (disorder) and broken (order) phases, but that of the even-order one remains positive when it is far away from the phase boundary. When the critical point is approached from the crossover side, negative fourth-order magnetic susceptibility is observable. It is also demonstrated that non-monotonic behavior occurs in the temperature dependence of the generalized susceptibilities of the energy. The finite-size scaling behavior of the specific heat in this model is mainly controlled by the critical exponent of the magnetic susceptibility in the three-dimensional Ising universality class.

Poisson baseline of net-charge fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Xue Pan; Yufu Lin; Lizhu Chen; M. Xu; Yuanfang Wu

Taking the doubly charged particles and positive-negative charge pair production into account, the Poisson baseline of the fluctuations of net-charge is studied. Within the Poisson baseline, the cumulants of net-charge are derived. Comparing to the Skellam baseline of net-charge, we infer that the doubly charged particles broaden the distributions of net-charge, while the positive-negative charge pairs narrow the distributions. With ratios of the doubly charged particles and positive-negative charge pairs to the total positive charges from THERMINATOR 2, the first four orders of moments and the corresponding moment products are calculated in the Poisson baseline for Au + Au collisions at

= 200 GeV at RHIC/STAR. We find that the standard deviation is mainly influenced by the resonance decay, while the third and fourth order moments and corresponding moment products are mainly modified and fit the data of RHIC/STAR much better after including the effects of volume fluctuations.

Critical behavior of Binder ratios and ratios of higher order cumulants of conserved charges in QCD deconfinement phase transition

Lizhu Chen; X. S. Chen; Xue Pan; Y. Wu

Abstract We investigate the measurement of the sixth order cumulant and its ratio to the second order cumulant ( C 6 / C 2 ) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The influence of statistics and different methods of centrality bin width correction on C 6 / C 2 of net-proton multiplicity distributions is demonstrated. There is no satisfactory method to extract C 6 / C 2 with the current statistics recorded at lower energies by STAR at RHIC. With statistics comparable to the expected statistics at the planned future RHIC Beam Energy Scan II (BES II), no energy dependence of C 6 / C 2 is observed in central collisions using the UrQMD model. We find that if the transition signal is as strong as predicted by the PQM model, then it is hopefully observed at the upcoming RHIC BES II.

Influence of initial size on higher cumulant ratios of net-proton number fluctuations

Fengbo Xiong; Lizhu Chen; Lin Li; Z. M. Li; Yuanfang Wu

QCD deconfinement phase transition is supposed to be the same universality class as the 3D-Ising model. According to the universality of critical behavior, the Binder-like ratios and ratios of higher cumulants of order parameter near the critical temperature in the 3D-Ising model are studied. The Binder-like ratio is shown to be a step function of temperature. The critical point is the intersection of the ratios of different system sizes between two platforms. The normalized cumulant ratios, like the Skewness and Kurtosis, do not diverge with correlation length, contrary to the corresponding cumulants. Possible applications of these characters in locating critical point in relativistic heavy ion collisions are discussed.
