the major structural units of the Algerian-Tunisian region, from south to north and from lowest upward, are the pre-Saharan units, corresponding to the autochthonous basement and comprising a Paleozoic craton and its cover; the intra-Tellian autochthonous complex; the semirigid Kabylian structure and its cover; the plastic Tell nappes; and the post-nappe Mio-Plio-Quaternary cover. Each of these units is described, the autochthonous, parautochthonous, and allochthonous units of the Tell region, Algeria, are defined, and the evolution of the Alpine orogeny in Algeria is outlined as a guide for the selection of symbols for representing the units on the Algerian Tunisian sheet of the international tectonic map.
