Extraordinary Leaders in Education: Understanding Transformational Leadership.

Peggy C. Kirby; Louis V. Paradise; Margaret I. King

Abstract The results of two investigations of leader characteristics and behaviors associated with extraordinary performance are reported. In a quantitative exploration using Basss Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire, educators associated leader effectiveness with charisma and intellectual stimulation. Problems are noted with the operational definition of charisma. In a separate investigation, narratives describing educational leaders perceived to be extraordinary were analyzed to determine more specific leader behaviors and characteristics that followers ascribe to those leaders. The qualitative results emphasize the importance of professional development opportunities for followers and suggest that specific leader behaviors, rather than personality, inspire followers to higher levels of performance.

Paul J. Gerber; Christine A. Schnieders; Louis V. Paradise; Henry B. Reiff; Rick Ginsberg; Patricia Popp

The issue of persistence of learning disabilities into the adult years was investigated. The study examined the self-reported comparisons of problems resulting from learning disabilities during school-age years (retrospectively) and in adult years. The responses of 133 adults categorized as highly successful and moderately successful in employment showed that both groups deteriorated markedly in the areas of functioning typically included in diagnostic and remediation efforts. This established a case for persistence and highlights an important issue for those who are directly or indirectly concerned about adults with learning disabilities.

Mental Health Professionals' Experiences of Vicarious Traumatization in Post–Hurricane Katrina New Orleans

Leslie M. Culver; Bridget L. McKinney; Louis V. Paradise

Mental health professionals in a variety of work settings regularly encounter clients who are trauma victims. This secondary exposure to trauma often results in the professionals experiencing the effects of trauma themselves, known as vicarious traumatization (VT). The present descriptive, sequential mixed-method study explored VT experienced by mental health professionals in the post–Hurricane Katrina New Orleans region using the Vicarious Traumatization Questionnaire (VTQ). The study also examined the impact of VT on the professional and personal functioning of mental health professionals through interviews with agency directors. Results indicated notable VT impact. Prevention and treatment implications are discussed.

A research group model for graduate training in counselling

Louis V. Paradise; Roxane L. Dufrene

ABSTRACT Faced with doing research, students are often hesitant. Most graduate students have never conducted extensive research, having few qualifications or little technical skills. This article focuses on helping students acquire research interests, understanding and skills by using an experiential research group model. The purpose of this article is to show how a research group model can complement the teaching and training of graduate students in counsellor education. We provide an example of how we developed a qualitative research project to examine the proposed research group model. The group model provided students with practical experience within a structured setting using five specific research topics. Perspectives of students and faculty on research groups as a positive addition to traditional teaching are provided.
