Relationship of Blood Type to Histocompatibility in Chickens

Louis W. Schierman; A. W. Nordskog

Evidence shows that the B blood group locus in chickens, which controls red cell antigens, is associated with tolerance of skin homografts. Three other blood group loci studied did not show this effect.

Relationship of Erythrocyte to Leukocyte Antigens in Chickens

Louis W. Schierman; A. W. Nordskog

Tests with blood typing antisera revealed that antigens of the A, D, and L blood group systems are erythrocyte specific, while antigens of the B and C systems are common to lymphocytes and erythrocytes. Injection of day-old chicks with erythrocytes inhibited production of agglutinins for lymphocytes as well as erythrocytes when subsequent immunizations were attempted.

Altered in vitro spleen cell growth in graft-versus-host reactions.

Raymond A. McBride; Eva Leckband; Bella Shore; Louis W. Schierman

Spleen cells obtained from chick embryos (or newly hatched chicks) undergoing a graft-versus-host reaction migrate poorly from capillary tubes. Maximal inhibition of migration occurs 5–8 days following inoculation of adult lymphoid cells, a time interval which corresponds to the development of maximal splenomegaly. Similar to splenomegaly as a manifestation of graft-versus-host reactions, the inhibition of spleen cell migration depends on the presence, in the recipient, of foreign tissue antigens determined by the major B blood group histocompatibility locus. The area of migration and the spleen weight have a significant linear association with the dose of immunologically competent donor cells and a high degree of negative correlation with respect to each other.
