Scholarly Journals in Agricultural Economics Libraries/Reference Rooms: A Survey

Grace Dote; Louise Letnes

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to develop a core list of journals for the field of agricultural economics. For this study, the holdings of members of the Agricultural Economics Reference Organization who represent agricultural economics libraries in the U.S. and Canada were surveyed. The resulting list of titles is compared to four similar lists, three in agricultural economics and the fourth in economics. Using any one list of journals is inadequate for collection development in agricultural economics. This survey list, along with other similar lists, can be used for decision making in selection and management of journal titles in the field.

Managing the grey literature of a discipline through collaboration : AgEcon search

Julia A. Kelly; Louise Letnes

ABSTRACT AgEcon Search, http://www.agecon.lib.umn.edu, is an important and ground-breaking example of an alternative method of delivering current research results to many potential users. AgEcon Search, through a distributed model, collects and disseminates the grey literature of the fields of agricultural and resource economics. The development of this widely-used Web resource was possible through the cooperation between academic institutions, academic libraries, professional associations, and government agencies. This article will provide examples of other collaborative efforts, outline the development of AgEcon Search and its proposed growth into AgEcon Search International, and discuss the prototype it provides for other disciplines.

AgEcon Search: Research in Agricultural Economics–Working Papers on the Internet

Patricia Rodkewich; Louise Letnes

ABSTRACT This paper discusses the building of a full text database of working papers produced by agricultural economics departments in U.S. universities. The authors propose to collect, index, and publish these papers on the Internet (WWW/GOPHER), making them searchable and immediately available for electronic transfer to the computer of any researcher requesting them.

AgEcon Search: History and Future of a Collaborative Subject Repository

Louise Letnes; Julia A. Kelly

ABSTRACT AgEcon Search is a free-to-user subject repository containing the full text of the grey literature and small press journals of agricultural and applied economics. It has developed over the last 14 years, through a close relationship between librarians and economists. Growth in international documents is in the future plan for AgEcon Search, and the developers hope it will serve as a prototype for subject repositories in other disciplines.
