This paper analyzes the main actions and resistance strategies unchained by the Brazilian feminist movement that, in the last thirty years, tried to eradicate violence against women. It discusses on one side, the violence as a control strategy on the female body and, on the other, the inefficacy of the Law N. 9,099/95. With the implementation of Maria da Penhas Law, an important legislative and juridical conquest in the struggle against violence towards women, changes are evidenced in the sociocultural strategies and in the juridical resources used in the country; however, expressions of institutional violence are still present in the culture and in the juridical practices. Such expressions are part of a male moral logic that still models the dominant procedures and that are present in the institutions and among public agents, as well as in the private sphere and in the family, in other words, in all Brazilian society.

This article deals with violence against women, while it focuses on the condition of gender as a central category of analysis for understanding the dynamics of this phenomenon. Initially, it locates the historical precedence of the construction of this field of study and research within the social sciences, particularly sociology, from a feminist viewpoint. In the sequel, it highlights the institutional places where this social phenomenon is received, as Specialized Police Stations for Women (Deams), which started in the 1980s, and health areas, that from the 1990s onwards have intensified. Finally, it underlines the legal framework of Maria da Penha Law (n.o11.340, of August 7, 2006), its advancements and its effective application.

In Brazil, most of the research on care for the elderly comes from areas such as geriatrics, gerontology, nursing and public health. This paper proposes to discuss a sociological concept to study the work of caring for elderly women living in Long Term Care Institutions for the Elderly (LTCIEs). Such concept has been forged out of research experiences in caring for the elderly in LTCIEs located in the Federal District and the state of Goias. The experience allowed the construction of a situational and multidimensional concept of care, considering a body technique re-created by female caregivers in Total Institutions; it includes affective, cognitive, moral and power-related aspects.
