Purpose – France is a country that widely relies on a skilled labour force. Nevertheless, very little is written in the management literature on the career experiences of skilled migrants, in particular from developing countries, in France. This paper argues that in order to understand the management of skilled migrants in France, there is a need to better understand their career experiences. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to fill this knowledge gap by offering an enhanced understanding of the career experiences of Malagasy migrant physicians in France.Design/methodology/approach – Based on the life story of 17 Malagasy migrant physicians and an interview with a Malagasy director of a private clinic who recruited Malagasy physicians to work in France, the paper sheds light on their career choices and challenges that they face in the French job market.Findings – The results clearly highlight two career profiles: firstly, those who succeeded in working as physicians either directly upon their gra...

This chapter highlights HRM management practices within two religious organizations by comparing HRM practices at the Headquarters and at local parish level. Results point to similarities of HR responsibilities of strategic partner, change agent, administrative expert and employee champion compared to HR Managers of laical organizations, at the Headquarters of the two religious organizations. In addition, the greater the number of employees, the more there is a need to have a formal HR Director position. At local level, the parish pastors from the two Christian Confessions act as a servant leader and have, sometimes like in laical organization, to act as an HR manager of proximity although it is not their major mission.

Abstract When exploring the effects of leadership on students, most studies have focused on either how leadership affects the students’ academic outcomes or how it contributes to their personal development. This study merged both approaches and aimed to measure the mediating effects of self-efficacy and self-determination among leadership, students’ intentions to persist and GPA. A Structural Equation Analysis was applied to a data-set of 1009 students from 39 countries to examine these relationships. The results showed a full mediating effect of academic self-efficacy between leadership and students’ intentions to persist and between leadership and GPA, and revealed a full mediating effect of self-determination through autonomy and relatedness constructs between leadership and intention to persist. This result implies that even though leadership does not directly affect students’ academic outcomes, it enhances their confidence and motivation, which provides them with the inner drive to aim high, persevere and achieve their goals. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are also discussed.
