HE forest land of Wisconsin has always presented a distinct regional aspect. Originally the northern part of the state was covered with mixed hardwood and coniferous forests, with interspersed solid stands of pine. This area lies in the short-summer phase of the humid continental climates (K6ppen Dfb). The same forests covered the Door Peninsula and the cool littoral along Lake Michigan south almost to the present site of Milwaukee. Southern, eastern, and western Wisconsin were originally part of the great hardwood forest of the eastern half of the northern United States. These
