Estudio de microfósiles de residuos adheridos en pipas cerámicas del sitio Villa JMC-1 Labranza, Región de la Araucanía

The study of microfossils is applied to two pipes from the Villa JMC-1 site, site which has been de- fined as a funerary context from the Pitren Complex, with the objective of recognizing which plants were used in the act of smoking. Although many written sources make reference to this activity during rituals, there is no direct archaeological evidence of which plants could have been consumed. In this perspective, this study aims to confront the ethnohistoric and ethnographic information with the archaeobotanical evidence recovered from the residues found in the chamber and tubes/mouthpieces of the pipes.

Towards the Reconstruction of the Ritual Expressions of Societies of the Early Ceramic Period in Central Chile: Social and Cultural Contexts Associated with the Use of Smoking Pipes

Drastic cultural changes occurred during the Early Ceramic Period (200 BC–1300 AD) in Chile. The social systems became more complex, manifested by the appearance of a large variety of cultural expressions in archaeological contexts, among them smoking pipes or quitras. The spatial discontinuity of this evidence and the fragmentary state of the investigation of smoking pipes has limited our understanding of the Smoking Complex. We aim to deepen this understanding and widen our perspective by examining their contents and their social scope and dispersion. Our investigation uses evidence from the Smoking Complex at the La Granja site (central Chile), which has been associated with ritual ceremonies of local ceramic and horticultural groups as well as groups from nearby localities.

EL SITIO TEMPRANO DE EL CEBOLLAR (LLAY-LLAY, V REGIÓN): CONTEXTO CULTURAL Y ASOCIACIONES VEGETACIONALES

Analizamos el material arqueologico recuperado desde el sitio El Cebollar, Llay-Llay, V Region, Chile, el cual se adscribe al periodo Alfarero Temprano. Este es el primer sitio abierto descrito para este periodo en el curso superior del rio Aconcagua. Analisis ceramico, litico y vegetacional fueron usados para limitar el sitio, caracterizando las afinidades culturales tanto como el uso potencial y actual de los recursos vegetales hechos por la poblacion que genero el sitio. El Cebollar fue probablemente un lugar habitacional, que albergo una poblacion humana semipermanente. Los habitantes de este sitio fueron probablemente horticultores, los cuales completaron su dieta con la recoleccion de la vegetacion de los alrededores. RECONSTRUYENDO LAS PRÁCTICAS FUMATORIAS DEL SITIO LA GRANJA (130 A 1000 D.C., VALLE DEL RÍO CACHAPOAL, VI REGIÓN, CHILE CENTRAL) A PARTIR DE LOS MICROFÓSILES

En la tarea de ampliar la definicion del Complejo Fumatorio propuesta para el sitio La Granja (valle del rio Cachapoal, VI Region, Chile Central, 130 a 1000 d.C.) se dispuso el estudio de los microfosiles contenidos en los residuos de uso de 62 pipas, con miras a determinar que elementos eran consumidos y como se vinculan al conocimiento y la eleccion de los efectos perseguidos. Mediante tecnicas de raspado y lavado se tomaron muestras de diferentes segmentos de las pipas. Cuarenta y siete resultaron positivas para la presencia de microfosiles. Las boquillas presentaron el registro promedio mas alto de microfosiles (25,46) comparado con los otros segmentos de la pipa como insercion tubo-hornillo (15,67) y tubo (6,66). Esta aproximacion permitio determinar la afinidad taxonomica de algunas plantas y elementos fumados, especificamente de Nicotiana spp. en nueve pipas, de otros taxa con menos recurrencia que el tabaco y elementos adicionados como bosta de animal. Ademas se efectuo el cruce de informacion entre los datos morfologicos y estilisticos de las pipas, la identificacion de microfosiles y el promedio/variedad de taxa presentes en los residuos de cada sector de estos artefactos, aportando nuevos aspectos a la interpretacion de usos y modalidades de las actividades fumatorias.
