The role of fire within Neolithic collective burials: Spatial analyses of cremains from the site of La Truie Pendue, France

Camille de Becdelievre; Sandrine Thiol; Laure Saligny; Ludovic Granjon; Stéphane Rottier

The use of collective graves is one of the main features of the western European Late Neolithic. A single gravesite received the successive deposition of dozens or sometimes hundreds of individuals. While cremations or even full-fired inhumation layers are often found within these funerary deposits, the actual role of fire is still poorly understood. Recently discovered within the important archaeological complex of Passy (Yonne, France), the burned collective grave of La Truie-Pendue provides an outstanding case study to examine the use of fire within Neolithic funerary rites. In this study, we develop a new contextual approach to bone alterations in order to reconstruct the original circumstances of combustion and to examine cultural motivations for the use of fire. Results of spatial statistical analyses indicate that the fire event was the first step of a procedure that sealed the grave, closed the access to the dead and signaled the end of the graves history. Similar sealing procedures were usual elsewhere during the Late Neolithic. Finally, this study demonstrates the value of using GIS as a tool to optimize taphonomic analyses of widely fragmented and commingled skeletal assemblages.

The geocatalog CArGOS: A catalog of geographical data for the SHS community: Cargos.tge-adonis.fr

Emeline Le Goff; Laure Saligny; Arnaud Millereux; Ludovic Granjon

CArGOS is a Catalog of Geographical Data in Social and Human Sciences (SHS), on-line since March, 2012. The presentation of this tool will state motivations at the origins of its development for a use at a national level, choices made and progress of work led since 2010. Through feedback experience, will be evoked the subject of the creation of a new version, getting loose from architectural constraints due to free applications, to serve in the best way the SHS communitys demands.

To value, by a spatial entry, the constitution of the digital corpus CARE (Corpus Architecturae Religiosae Europeae - saec. IVX), stored in the Wikibridge database, a special application of on-line mapping was realized using OpenLayers, MapServer with TileCache and GeoJSON web service for the link with CARE Wikibridge.

Les Avancées du Corpus CARE en France (2008-2011)

Pascale Chevalier; Christian Sapin; Ludovic Granjon; Eric Leclercq; Arnaud Millereux; Marinette Savonnet

The ANR project CARE-IV-X saec. (2008-2011) is the French contribution to the international program, introduced in 2002 by the IRCLAMA - a corpus aiming to list the religious buildings of Europe between the 4thand the very beginning of the 11thcent. AD. These churches have been studied in France since the 19thcent.; the Corpus has to give an up-to-date vision using current methodologies. France elaborated the IT database, semantic Web Wikibridge, with on-line seizure and interrogations, which will be used by all the European countries after translations. Since 2010, the Wiki system allows French regional teams or individuals to prepare forms for IT seizure and texts intended for a paper publication. As in the other countries involved in the project, work is progressing at various speeds. Some of the working teams of archaeologists, historians, art historians - from most of French universities, CNRS , Ministry of Culture (archaeology, historical monuments, museums and archives), region or town archaeology ...
