Development of Contraceptives — Obstacles and Opportunities

On February 14, 1990, the National Research Councils Committee on Contraceptive Development released a report on a two-year study of the process by which contraceptives are developed and approved for use in the United States.* The committee was established on the basis of a request to the Committee on Population of the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine and received support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Among the topics considered were the pace at which new products were being brought to the market, the effects of organizational and policy issues on the contraceptive-development process, and ways of .xa0.xa0.
