Between the First and Second World Wars, Buenos Aires went through a series of physical, social and cultural changes, forming a definitive stage in the city’s evolution. This stage bridged two other better-known historical moments: the spectacular growth of the late nineteenth century, and the urban transformation of the city of Peronist masses.

Between Rise and Fall: Self-Employed Workers in Buneos Aires, 1850–1880

In the mid-nineteenth century, urban and rural Buenos Aires was populated by a vast sector of self-employed workers. The survival and renewed vitality of this sector over the following three decades appears as a paradox faced with the sustained advance of the capitalist enterprise during an epoch of profound transformation of the productive structure of the province.1
