ABSTRACT Analysis of the oil of Tagetes argentina Cabrera by gas chromatography confirmed that (Z)-ocimenone (43.62–45.59%) and (E)-ocimenone (37.29–40.38%) were the main components. Lesser amounts of (Z)-β-ocimene (1.46–1.49%), (E)-β-ocimene (2.00–7.26%), dihydrotagetone (3.82–6.57%), (Z)-tagetone (1.29–1.77%) and (E)-tagetone (1.30–1.87%) were also found in this oil

ABSTRACT As a part of our research on aromatic plants from Cordoba, Argentina, we have examined the oil composition of Hyptis mutabilis (Rich.) Briq. using GC and GC/MS. The main constituents found were camphor (14.37%), myrcenone (14.85%), cis-dihydrocarvone (11.38%) and trans-dihydrocarvone (32.91%).

Abstract Two varieties of Viguiera tucumanensis , collected in two different geographical regions of Argentina, were shown to have a very close chemical constitution. They all gave the new diterpene clerod-14-ene-3α,4β,13ζ-triol. The taxonomic implications are discussed briefly.

Whole plants of Schkuhria pinnata var. abrotanoides yielded, in addition to known sesquiterpene lactones, five new heliangolides, a germacranolide, schkuhripinnatolide C and pectolarigenin.

The essential oils (EOs) of two populations of Azorella cryptantha (Clos) Reiche, a native species from San Juan Province, were obtained by hydrodistillation in a Clevenger‐type apparatus and characterized by GC‐FID and GC/MS analyses. The compounds identified amounted to 92.3 and 88.7% of the total oil composition for A. cryptantha from Bauchaceta (Ac‐BAU) and Agua Negra (Ac‐AN), respectively. The EO composition for the two populations was similar, although with differences in the identity and content of the main compounds and also in the identity of minor components. The main compounds of the Ac‐BAU EO were α‐pinene, α‐thujene, sabinene, δ‐cadinene, δ‐cadinol, trans‐β‐guaiene, and τ‐muurolol, while α‐pinene, α‐thujene, β‐pinene, γ‐cadinene, τ‐cadinol, δ‐cadinene, τ‐muurolol, and a not identified compound were the main constituents of the Ac‐AN EO, which also contained 3.0% of oxygenated monoterpenes. The repellent activity on Triatoma infestans nymphs was 100 and 92% for the Ac‐AN and Ac‐BAU EOs, respectively. Regarding the toxic effects on Ceratitis capitata, the EOs were very active with LD50 values lower than 11 μg/fly. The dermatophytes Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton rubrum, and T. mentagrophytes and the bacterial strains Escherichia coli LM1, E. coli LM2, and Yersinia enterocolitica PI were more sensitive toward the Ac‐AN EO (MIC 125 μg/ml) than toward the Ac‐BAU EO. This is the first report on the composition of A. cryptantha EO and its anti‐insect and antimicrobial properties.

Abstract Famatinanthus, a new genus of Asteraceae (Mutisioideae, Onoserideae), is described and illustrated to accommodate one species from the Andes of Argentina, that was previously placed in Aphyllocladus, A. decussatus, as Famatinanthus decussatus comb. nov. The new genus is tentatively assigned to the tribe Onoserideae based on its shrubby habit, solitary radiate capitula, style rounded at the apex and dorsally papillose, and 2–3-seriate heteromorphic pappus. Famatinanthus is similar to Aphyllocladus but it is easily distinguished by the leafy, decussate branches with opposite leaves, multistoried T-trichomes, cream corollas, apiculate apical anther appendages, setuliferous achenes, terete stems, lack of secretory cavities, and pollen with a conspicuous mesoaperture and microechinate-rugulate exine. A key to the genera of the Onoserideae is presented. Affinities of the new genus with other genera of the tribes Gochnatieae, Hyalideae, and Stifftieae are also discussed.

Abstract Extraction of the aerial parts of Helenium donianum var. donianum and H. donianum var. linearifolium is described. An array of known and new helenanolides, guaianolide glucosides and lavandulyl-type glucosides was isolated from H. donianum var. donianum , while H. donianum var. linearifolium consistently yielded a different combination of known and new helenanolides, a new guaianolide and a known guaianolide rhamnoside. The results are in agreement with Bierners classification of H. donianum in Argentina and correct misidentification of collections studied earlier. The C-2 stereochemistry of the helenanolides alternilin and flexuosin and the C-1 stereochemistry of some known guaianolides is corrected.
