El color en spots infantiles: prevalencia cromática y relación con el logotipo de marca

Luis Enrique Martínez Martínez; Juan Monserrat; Victoria Tur Alicante

is a crucial element in achieving effective and efficient communication. This article presents an analysis of the color elements used in TV ads aimed at children broadcast during November 2009 in Spain by the Disney Channel childrens network which, according to Kantar Media, is the audience leader in open-to-air television programing. The convenience sample included the group of advertisers that Infoadex classifies as part of the «sports and leisure» sector, which includes products and services traditionally aimed at children, such as toys and leisure parks, as well as self-promotion ads for other television networks. The analysis quantifies the use of color in ads aimed at children and concludes that brands use color in very different ways. This study also examines the relationship between the color combinations chosen by advertisers in their ads and logos, confirming that the use of color combinations in ads and logos is arbitrary. Most advertisers who target children prefer to apply a range of colors to create contrast and highlight the product and its features and benefits, instead of strengthening the brands corporate image. The study highlights the randomness in decision-making on the use of color.

Novel prospects in hyperbolic metamaterials: Dyakonov-like surface waves

Carlos J. Zapata-Rodríguez; J. Aitor Sorní; Slobodan Vuković; Luis Enrique Martínez Martínez; María Teresa Caballero Caballero; Juan Jose Miret

In the late 1980s Dyakonov theoretically demonstrated the existence of lossless surface waves at the interface between two different transparent dielectrics, provided that one of them was anisotropic. These (also coined as) dyakonons have low-efficiency coupling rates in natural birefringent materials and all-dielectric metamaterials, thus reducing its use in photonic applications. We analyzed enhanced coupling of dyakonons taking place at the boundary of metamaterials exhibiting indefinite permittivity. Hybridization of surface waves enable tighter confinement near the interface in comparison with pure-TM surface-plasmon polaritons. Finally we predicted the existence of long-range dissipative dyakonons.

Subwavelength beams with polarization singularities in plasmonic metamaterials

Carlos J. Zapata-Rodríguez; María Teresa Caballero Caballero; Luis Enrique Martínez Martínez; Juan Jose Miret

We investigated the diffraction behavior of plasmonic Bessel beams propagating in metal-dielectric stratified materials and wire media. Our results reveal various regimes in which polarization singularities are selectively maintained. This polarization-pass effect can be controlled by appropriately setting the filling factor of the metallic inclusions and its internal periodic distribution. These results may have implications in the development of devices at the nanoscale level for manipulation of polarization and angular momentum of cylindrical vector beams.

Single-Polarization Double Refraction in Plasmonic Crystals: Considerations on Energy Flow

Carlos J. Zapata-Rodríguez; David Pastor; Luis Enrique Martínez Martínez; María Teresa Caballero Caballero; Juan Jose Miret

We examined the optical properties of nanolayered metal-dielectric lattices. At subwavelength regimes, the periodic array of metallic nanofilms demonstrates nonlocality-induced double refraction, conventional positive and as well as negative. In particular, we report on energy-flow considerations concerning both refractive behaviors concurrently. Numerical simulations provide transmittance of individual beams in Ag-TiO2 metamaterials under different configurations. In regimes of the effective-medium theory predicting elliptic dispersion, negative refraction may be stronger than the expected positive refraction.

Plasmon-driven Bessel beams

Carlos J. Zapata-Rodríguez; David Pastor; María Teresa Caballero Caballero; Luis Enrique Martínez Martínez; Juan Jose Miret

We report on subwavelength diffraction-free beams with grazing propagation in metal-dielectric devices. The nondiffracting beams are resonantly transmitted through the nanostructured medium leading to light confinement and wave amplification around the beam axis.
