PURPOSE The difficulty to anesthetize small laboratory animals with vaporizer prompted us to go in search of new materials, and create new techniques. The improved equipment of anesthesia we looked for should be low cost, practical, versatile, and its management serve ethical, teaching, and research purposes. METHODS The new components of the equipment were: the vaporizer, the unidirectional valve, the glass cylinder filled with water, the flow guidance y-shape tube, the flow regulators, the mask modifications, and another free airway for emergency occurrence. A test was done with 30 Wistar rats, Rattus norvegicus albinus, divided into three groups with 10 rats for each one. Groups 1, 2 and 3 were anesthetized with Ether, Halothane and Sevoflurane respectively, using the new gadget. The anesthetic induction time, the breathing rhythm alteration during an anesthesia pre-established time (10 minutes), and the recovery time were observed. RESULTS The equipment enabled an easy handling, and fulfilled a larger safeness and stability during the induction and anesthetic management. The test showed it was possible to make use of several anesthetic agents. CONCLUSION The device is effective, and turns the anesthesia procedure into a very easy practice with low-cost. It should be recommended for experimental surgery, teaching and research.

OBJECTIVE: To comparatively analyze the 30-day results between endarterectomy and angioplasty using self-expandable stent and filter protection in the treatment of carotid bifurcation atherosclerotic lesions. The primary endpoint was to analyze stroke and death rate, as well hospitalization time. METHODS: Comparative and prospective study in 80 symptomatic and asymptomatic patients, with carotid bifurcation stenotic lesions greater than 60 and 70%, respectively. The patients were divided into two groups of 40 and assessed according to gender, age, associated comorbid conditions and smoking. RESULTS: The stroke and death rate was 5.0% for both techniques. There was only one case of transient ischemic attack (2.5%) in the endovascular group. Regarding hospitalization time, it was significantly lower in favor of the endovascular technique, with statistical significance (P < 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a 5.0% incidence of stroke and death in 30 days considering both techniques. However, the endovascular group presented a statistically significant shorter hospitalization time than the endarterectomy group (P < 0.002).

Vascular complications after kidney transplantation have been described and pseudoaneurysms represent a well-recognized vascular complication. Although the incidence of pseudoaneurysm is low, it may potentially cause graft loss or may even be fatal for the patients if it is not diagnosed and treated quickly. The authors report a case of renal artery pseudoaneurysm diagnosed two months posttransplantation with cadaveric graft, the treatment and literature data.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm reconstruction is usually performed in vascular surgical practice. However, the repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with a pelvic kidney is rare. Our goal is to present a case report of an abdominal aortic aneurysm associated with two congenital pelvic kidneys wich was treated successfully by aneurysmectomy and inclusion of an aortoaortic graft.

Splenic artery aneurysm is a rare disease whose incidence varies from 1.6% in autopsies of the general population to 7.1% in autopsies of people suffering from portal hypertension.1 It was first describt by Beussier 9 in 1770. In most cases the aneurysms are detected as occasional finds during clinical investigation of other diseases.2 lt is being diagnosed more frequently nowadays because of the increasing use of Duplex Scan, computorized tomografy and visceral arteriography.11 ln opposition to the aneurysms of great vessels, which are more frequent in men, aneurysms of the splenic artery is more frequent in women.3 This study investigates ten patients with aneurysms of the splenic artery, treated in the Universitary Hospital Clementino Fraga Filho between 1978 and 1997. The diagnosis was made by arteriography in four patients, by tomography in two, by ultrasound in two. One aneurysm was diagnosed by simple abdominal X-ray and one could only be found during the surgical procedure, as it was ruptured. There was a total of 14 aneurysms, unique in nine patients and multiple (five) in one. We found a predominance of women in a rate of four women to each man. Surgical treatment was made in 60% of the patients, embolization with Gianturco coills and Gellfoan in 10%, association of embolization and surgery in 10% and clinical treatment in 20%. There was no death during treatment.
