Computerized Brain Interfaces for Adaptive Learning and Assessment

Rosa Arnaldo; Javier Iglesias; Víctor Fernando Gómez; Javier Crespo; Luis Miguel Ruiz Pérez; José Félix Alonso; Alvaro Rodriguez Sanz

This paper presents a project, which aims to develop a low-cost Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), whose characteristics may allow educational institutions to improve the learning and evaluation methodologies applicable to a specific student. By collecting reliable electroencephalogram (EEG) data, the system will realize a cognitive state monitoring of the learner and will evaluate its brain activity to adapt the content and visualization of the learning material. Two main objectives have been established in order to determine the success of the investigation: Assess the use of contemporaneous low-cost EEG devices and applications as a proper method to obtain reliable results of the students’ cognitive state. Develop signal-processing algorithms that allow identifying the cognitive state of the students as well as their working memory load (WML).

Motor Imagery Brain–Computer Interface for RPAS Command and Control

Rosa Arnaldo; Fernando Gómez Comendador; Luis Miguel Ruiz Pérez; Alvaro Rodriguez

Nowadays, technology is evolving towards the development of new controlling methods based in signals produced by our brain (Brain Computer Interfaces BCI). Applications of Brian computing Interfaces are also being explored in the field of aeronautics. This paper presents the initial steps of a work focused on the evaluation of brain patterns that occur when an individual excites the brain to perform an action. The final goal of this project is to implement this method in a real time program that is capable of filtering the signals obtained by brain measurement system; treating these signals to obtain the amplitude accumulation at the indicated frequencies and sending the control commands to a RPAS in order to be able to control it.

The use of virtual flight simulation for airspace design in aeronautical engineering education

Rosa Arnaldo; Luis Miguel Ruiz Pérez; Javier Crespo; Felix Alonso

The technology of current home PC flight simulators, specifically their powerful graphics and the simulator physics models, makes them a useful resource for training and education. Although the teacher should help the student to be aware of the simulators weak points, to avoid picking up misconceptions, PC flight simulators and internet virtual worlds are becoming recognized as an important training resource in aeronautical disciplines such as engineering. This paper presents an innovative project, developed by Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica Aeronautica (EUITA) [University School of Aeronautical Technical Engineering] of the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid [Polytechnic University of Madrid], to help the students to master several aeronautical disciplines. The project includes the development of a complete set of educational simulations supported by commercial “off the shelf” flight videogame simulator and Internet Virtual World for pilot and air traffic control simulation.
