Gender studies and translation studies are related in many different ways: bothare trans-disciplinary fields that play roles in numerous other academic disciplines– in the social sciences, the humanities, in law and in medicine, as well asin commerce. Both raise questions about socio-cultural and political meaningfulness, and its control – whether in regard to sexual difference or textual difference–, and both operate across linguistic, cultural, geographical and nationalborders. This chapter explores the many ways the two disciplines connect, withJoan Scott’s essay on the translation issues around the English term “gender” ininternational forums serving as the stimulus for a broader discussion about howthese two areas of study can be brought together.
