The development of the concept of infantile in Freud. Freud’s understanding of the importance of infancy in psychical constitution is fundamental in psychoanalysis, leading us to consider that the notion of infantile, in metapsychology, assumes the statute of a concept. This essay proposes to research the concept of infantile in Freud. In order to point out the precocity of the appearance of the concept in psychoanalysis, the initial moments of Freud’s works are favored. Some texts written after the pre-psychoanalytic publications, such as “The Interpretation of Dreams” and “The three essays on the theory of sexuality”, will also be analyzed, so as to point out the initial development of the concept of infantile in metapsychology and in psychoanalytic

In this article, the metapsychological concept of identification is simultaneously understood as the basis for the mechanisms of the individuals insertion in social groups - in a cultural context - as well as a key factor in the overcoming of the Oedipus conflict and the comprehension of the constitution of the self. It is suggested that the concept of identification enables us to understand psychic and social factors as elements in the constitution of the individual which, therefore, should not be considered separately. This also indicates the metapsychological character that the social factor acquires in Freuds psychoanalytical theory. The main source for the current analysis is the 1921 essay by Freud entitled Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego.

The main purpose of this essay is to develop the idea that the object-relations theory, introduced in the psychoanalytical movement as an opposition to the libido theory as basis to psychic constitution, produced a radical change in the psychoanalytical concept of subjects. Change is represented by the quitting of the drive as a subject foundation and by the apprehension and comprehension of subjects as personalities, or rather, substantially structured. In terms of methodology, the main work by William Ronald D. Fairbairn (1889-1964) was analyzed and taken as paradigmatic for all object-relations theories. The evolution of Fairbairns thoughts, from his studies on schizophrenia - and the contradiction it brought to the contemporary libido theory - to the changes and overcoming the author proposed to accomplish in psychoanalytical theory, as a result of his finding that the libidinal goal is an object, are presented. The main purpose of this essay is to develop the idea that the object-relations theory, introduced in the psychoanalytical movement as an opposition to the libido theory as basis to psychic constitution, produced a radical change in the psychoanalytical concept of subjects.

ABSTRACT - This essay proposes a critical review of psychoanalysis, emphasizing its origin in Freud and its more recent achievements. It points out the evolution of Freud´s work by means of its most important markers, namely, the discovery, importance and scope of the unconscious, and issues concerning intensity, sexuality, pulsion (trieb) and variations, advances and retreats of object relations. Three guiding models of the original psychoanalytic thought and its derivations are identified: the neurotic, the melancholic and the paranoid. The main aspects in evidence in contemporary psychoanalysis are also emphasized, including Brazilian authors. Finally, it is presented a reflection on the vectors that may guide the future of psychoanalysis with respect to its theoretical and clinical aspects, areas of expertise and relations with culture. Keywords: psychoanalysis; unconscious; sexuality; pulsion; object relations.
